Re: Joseph coulnd't possibly have relied on Adam Clarke

I would be interested in seeing these several articles. AFIK there are only three publications on this. The short publication put out by Wilson for her grant, the expansion of the same article published as chapter 11 in Producing Ancient Scripture , and the agenda driven legacy protecting review by...

Re: Joseph coulnd't possibly have relied on Adam Clarke

Way to form an opinion and a conclusion without actually reading the article. "Parallels between the two texts number into the hundreds..." It's not just a "few". I've read several articles about this, and await the book for their full "case." So far, in my view, the crumbs they've let out are unde...

Re: Joseph coulnd't possibly have relied on Adam Clarke

I intend on looking into the Wayment/Wilson-Lemmon study more thoroughly, but my initial thought beforehand is that it has to be along the lines of B.H. Roberts' orchard analogy: picking up a few worm-eaten, wind-blasted specimens off the ground and representing it as the fruit of the entire orchard...

Re: Teryl Givens article on BH Roberts - where did it go?

Well, the "I" is he, the speaker, in this study submitted to the apostles. As he explained, he was speaking in the voice of a critic, showing them on what grounds it could be questioned (and why sophisticated attacks along these lines would be a threat to members' faith --- especially young people i...

Re: Teryl Givens article on BH Roberts - where did it go?

Pretty strong words. Was he playing devils advocate? Was he trying to shake up the Q15 to think more deeply about these problems, rather than just pass them off to the smartest guy in the room to solve for them? Was he sincerely questioning the historicity of Book of Mormon? Did he later decide to ...

Re: Teryl Givens article on BH Roberts - where did it go?

Hagoth --- when did you experience "Brother Givens' Traveling Salvation Show?" :) Was it around 2014, or much later? If later, than "boo" for Givens, because he clearly knew better. The ebb and flow of memory makes me dread a police investigator ever asking me "where were you on the night of...? bu...

Re: Teryl Givens article on BH Roberts - where did it go?

Addendum: I see in the item Fifth Columnist gave from the Wayback Machine that Givens acknowledged that Roberts cited the LGT, but then he dismisses this by saying (without evidence) that he didn't really believe it. That item is dated 2014. Hagoth --- when did you experience "Brother Givens' Travel...

Re: Teryl Givens article on BH Roberts - where did it go?

Givens spoke about this at one of his travelling fireside pandemonium shadow shows for my stake. I was surprised and excited when he brought up the topic of B. H. Roberts' investigation of Book of Mormon challenges. I was equally disappointed when he showed a slide of Limited Geography and said, "i...

Re: The Millennials simplified.

I'm not sure what you mean by your suggestion that the current climate for intellectuals might be better, or might be worse, than that of Roberts' time. How would it be better? How would it be worse? I think there are some paradoxes. In my view, the heyday of Mormon thinkers was the Roberts/Widtsoe...
