I'm sure that you'll agree that even a cursory reading reveals that David Brooks is suggesting that perception is not a closed system.
Again, I’m not directly correlating the two. They stand apart from each other. One is inside the other but the other exists independently.

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

MG, where do you get this "we all live in a closed system" stuff? What does it even mean? I'm having a difficult time following you. edit: Earlier, however, I mentioned that we live within a closed system of perceived reality. And that’s as good as it’s gonna’ get. How the hell is our perception of...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

I view all these “isms” as tools or lenses to aid understanding. But they don’t do that if one mixes and matches them in an ad hoc manner in a way that reaches a desired outcome. I think that’s what you are doing when you posit “spiritual truth” as something other than socially constructed reality....

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

I do not agree with the splitting up of what I believed to be an on topic conversation. It’s been taken apart and dismantled so as to disrupt the flow of discussion. I don’t know if this is a recent moderator tactic to derail a discussion or a decision you made with full integrity and fairness. As ...

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

I cannot get inside the minds of those that have a worldview that may not completely dovetail with mine. You've already established that, the point is, just like per you, as critics, we can't get into the minds of believers therefore we must acknowledge their equally valid worldview, are you willin...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

I’ve moved posts that discuss the quote from Brooks’ book on constructionism to a pre-existing thread where the same quote is the topic. https://discussmormonism.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=158676&start=10 UR 4 I do not agree with the splitting up of what I believed to be an on topic conversation. It’s...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

Gadianton, I don’t find this conversation interesting. I only referenced what you said to make a point on another thread.

It might be well to go ahead and carry on this thread’s conversation and topic so as not to derail.

Thanks.

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

Gadianton marks me as as being solipsistic. No, I marked you as a 6-day creation fundamentalist who operates in a black and white world, believing that you have the absolute 100% truth, playing the solipsism card only when specific topics come up that you don't have good answers for. You are not a ...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

Thomas Wayment: In this link you provided we see that one of the researchers left the church (although not primarily due to her collaboration on the JST origins) and the other, a professor, didn’t. This clarifies the point I’m attempting to make in that we all enter the room and come out having int...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

One thing that is an interesting feature of constructionism is that we don’t individually create our reality — we do it socially through interacting with others. Even a brief exchange such as this contributes to that construction. Take care. Yes we do. That seems to be self evident. That’s one of t...
