Re: RM shout out
I served a mission long ago. I wanted to serve, but, in hindsight, I was extremely naïve and innocent. It was a hard mission -- incredible poverty and awful living conditions. But, overall, a great experience that taught me a lot. I do NOT regret going, although I do regret some of the things I did ...

Agreed. It becomes particularly obvious when you peruse the footnotes and see all the times he is cited.fetchface wrote:This essay was obviously written by Brian Hales. I have read his three volume set and there is no question that this is his baby.

Re: My Thoughts On The New Essay: The Good, The Bad and The
Overall, I think this is essay is very positive. It puts forth a decent overview of the issues, and some good references for the student of Church history. I guess the essay could be viewed as some sort of "progress," but I see it as a continuation of the "whitewash" we've come ...

Re: Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo Essay Up!
Joseph Smith was sealed to a number of women who were already married. Neither these women nor Joseph explained much about these sealings, though several women said they were for eternity alone. Other women left no records, making it unknown whether their sealings were for time and eternity or were...

Re: Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo Essay Up!
I've read through the essay just once so far, and here are my initial observations: 1. Nice admission that "in Joseph Smith's time, monogamy was the ONLY LEGAL FORM of marriage in the United States." (Caps added for emphasis). Thanks for finally admitting that ALL Joseph's marriages (other...

Re: It's Now Official, "Meet the Mormons" Is A Major Boner.
The membership sure got fleeced on this one -- to the tune of $2.7 million over this past weekend (coming in at #11 at the box office). I'm pretty sure over 95% of the viewers were TBM's so the Red Cross got a nice windfall. Of course, the full-time missionaries are seeing the film for free on DVD (...

Re: The High cost of Being a Mission President
The Mission President’s Handbook ... I have a friend who served a California mission in the 1990s under mission president and now-Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland. When Holland’s child used the missionary car to travel to a Sacramento King’s basketball game and got into an accident, my friend said that h...

Re: Essays now being advertised....
I think the essays have resulted in more troublesome questions than real answers for members with knowledge of LDS history beyond the official manuals. For example, the priesthood ban essay tacitly admits that prior prophets led us astray on that issue ( i.e. , the ban stemmed from man's racism of t...

One would think so; but wouldn't something like this prevent that, at least for a while until things settles down? The kid has made the Church look bad, which is a 'kiss of death' with the Brethren these days.Bazooka wrote:Shouldn't he be serving a mission?

Re: Columbus among the Nephites
Hmm ... doesn't the title of DCP's article -- "Columbus Among the Nephites" -- seemingly contradict the Mopologists' argument of the LGT in Mesoamerica?
