Re: Mormon Missionary Rules?

While there's a white handbook and lots of rules dictated from on high, you'd be surprised at how much the day to day regulation (or lack thereof) of the missionaries comes from their local mission president. MPs can and do vary greatly in the restrictions they put on their missionaries. I was fortu...

Re: Mormons aren't Christians.

Of course Dr Land is correct Not really. Mormonism believes in a created God too, not just a created Jesus. the Mormons believe they have a better handle on the personages than the orthodox christians. With the obvious hole in all of this that is the Holy Ghost. Who is the Holy Ghost? What does he ...

Re: Why do conservatives hate government but love religion.

I bet it's pretty simple: these guys aren't against authoritarian control, they just think that God or his appointed viceroys on Earth are the ones who should wield it. In a sense, the federal government is simply a "false prophet" type of thing, usurping the rightful place of God in contr...

Re: Women missionaries can now wear pants

Ok, this is horrible and callous, and is definitely meant as a really bad joke, and I'm a terrible person for even thinking it, much less putting it out there, but...

Maybe the church ought to consider that in future generations of Mormons tiny heads and brains might improve retention?

Re: Peterson: Nephites didn't have coins, So Book of Mormon is true

It's the NOMs who have furtive imaginations. They think they can fly under the radar. It's the mopologists whose imaginations are anything but furtive - they put it all out there, in print, for the world to see. When NOMs eschew furtiveness and put it all out there too, they tend to find themselves ...

DrW wrote:She said that more recently she had stopped paying tithing altogether and felt much less anxious about her finances as a result.

Well, she found a good way to give her fixed income a 10% raise (probably more, really). Good for her!

Re: This board shall be a Tumblr unto Me

I'm in awe here. So far my favorite has been the Pinata of Faith. It's your fault you don't have any candy! That works on so many levels, and hits at the essence of modern Mormonism so insightfully, yet succinctly. The Silence of the Prophets one was formerly my favorite, now it's a close second.

Re: Denver Snuffer and My Lifelong TBM Mother

Well that's certainly interesting DrW. I couldn't imagine that happening with my parents, but then, you couldn't imagine it either with your mother, and look what's happened. So who knows? While I'm happy to see the Morg bleeding like this, it still saddens me in a way that people are leaving it not...

Re: The Genuineness of Nightlion

Well I'm glad you enjoyed your winnings NL. I don't buy scratch tickets or whatever because it's just a voluntary tax marketed to those who can least afford it, but I'm not opposed to gambling in principle (though for some people it becomes an addiction and they ruin their lives). I recently won a p...

Re: Peterson: Nephites didn't have coins, So Book of Mormon is true

Rather than continuing to fight that Nephite "pieces of gold and silver" with names and established values and exchange rates weren't coins, one could just admit that this represents and anachronism in the Book of Mormon. Who am I kidding? From the guy who argued that steel swords are real...
