Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

Good intentions has no bearing on whether their actions are immoral or not... I find statements like this puzzling in the extreme. To say there is a huge disconnect between us is an understatement. ETA: Perhaps Physics Guy can see why I am getting stuck on basic concepts that are not that interesti...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

I may call Flat Earthers fools, but I won't call them immoral, unless they know about the Big Blue Marble photo and are deliberately hiding it. You seem to be saying that it is possible for people to disingenuously form a worldview. I do not think this is possible. A worldview by definition cannot ...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

Are you perhaps getting bogged in a merely semantic difference? People can differ on what they count as "the act" and what they count as "the context", without necessarily disagreeing on anything substantial. If I define "cutting with a knife" as the act then the diffe...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

Evidence-based morality vs faith-based morality. Well, I'm not sure that anyone's moral reasoning fits neatly into either of those bins. I guess I reject the dichotomy in favor of a continuous spectrum. Some people do a particularly bad job at verifying that there is a good reason to believe what t...

I don't understand what the two things you are referring to are. What are the two things that are different? I don't see how any of the things you said are incompatible with what I said.

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

The BS comes in trying to muddy the context to make a case that has strayed from the subject presented in the OP. I don't know. There wasn't much to discuss in the OP, and I guess I wasn't aware that we are not allowed to respond to subsequent ideas presented afterward. I guess I thought I was tryi...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

Though perhaps difficult to identify and pin down sometimes, there are definitely acts which are immoral. I don't know. The more I think about it, the more I think that pretty much any act could be morally justified if the context were extreme enough. I think this is the major flaw with having fait...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

It's easy to say that withholding information and that denying the right of informed consent is morally wrong. Who wouldn't agree with that? That's a boring discussion to have. YAWN. What is more interesting to me is to try to understand how it is that people who are brought up from childhood to hig...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

I think a careful reading of the Dehlin quote in the OP shows that he was talking about immoral actions, not immoral people. I may be the one to blame for shifting the discussion from acts to people. If I say "so-and-so is immoral", I don't anything more than, "so-and-so does immoral...

Re: John Dehlin on the Immorality of Mormonism!

Below that point, though, I think there's a range in which no-one has a right to be that self-confident, especially when others' lives are going to be affected. Everybody who has outgrown puberty should know from experience that they can be wrong, and should therefore be double-checking assumptions...
