Re: Mormonism Alive & Well
See https://www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeterson/2019/12/on-the-churchs-impending-death.html Bahahahahahaha! I rather liked that little historical romp. The earliest predictions of Mormonism's rapid demise were no later than the death of Joseph Smith, and thus even a fair amount earlier than those Dan...

Re: Margaret Barker Decimates Mormonism at its Core
I'm going to go check and see if Deseret Book has it tomorrow. Thanks, and yes it will be interesting to see just what you are up to, because you are treading thin ice here. The First Temple materials Barker uses is not in the program of Mormonism, and is considered apostate, odder than all get out...

Re: The Plates Don't Make Sense to Me
"Put them with" is unclear, I agree. The honest reader can interpret that either way. Are there not some problems with the account of finding the man walking along the road, such as his name? I forget the details. Also, odd behavior for an angelic messenger walk along the road, with plate...

Re: The Lost 116 Pages, by Don Bradley
Hey Dr. Moore, I'm not aware of any source that specifies just how much of the day they spent on the transcription of the text. I suspect it was just a few hours a day. Since we don't have any detailed information on that it would be difficult to state a words per minute rate, even within a ballpark...

Re: The Plates Don't Make Sense to Me
Kish, Joseph Smith narrated in his history that when the angel gave him the plates of Mormon on September 22, 1827, the plates were no longer under the angel's guardianship and were now his responsibility until he was finished translating them. So when Joseph left New York on November 1, 1827 to beg...

Re: Margaret Barker Decimates Mormonism at its Core
Hey Kerry! I think you'd enjoy my book on the lost 116 pages, brother. If your read it, then regarding Aaron's rod that budded, see what is explicitly laid out in Chapters 8 and 11. Regarding the Menorah, look for the implications in Chapters 9 and 11. Regarding the Holy Spirit, see Chapter 14. Rega...

Re: Book of Mormon and Koran
At least Muslim scholars are honest enough to recognize and admit the truth regarding their scriptures. Muslims, unlike Latter-day Saints, consider their founding scripture to be absolutely infallible, something the Book of Mormon denies about itself on its title page. Mormon scripture is acknowled...

Re: R.I.P.: William J. Hamblin
Kish, That's beautiful to hear of that loyalty that Bill had toward Dan as a his friend, and I know it is one shared by Dan toward Bill. Loyalty is a pretty strong character trait I've long observed in the FARMS old guard as a whole, and it's probably one of the things that draws them so strongly to...

Re: Updated essay on Joseph Smith - women & priesthood
Women perform endowment ordinances for other women. And women act in various callings and responsibilities in the church. While this has not traditionally been defined as priesthood, that's only because there's been an inconsistency in how the term "priesthood" has been used. Priesthood ha...

Re: On Sandra Tanner and "Enemies of Mormonism"
I agree with Kish that Sandra is an enemy of Mormonism (pretty obviously). I also agree that she is a very kind person. I only met Jerald Tanner once, at their bookstore. I have to admit to genuine shock when he came out to the store and I saw one of the most saintly looking human beings I'd ever se...
