Re: Certain people can't ever get it right

Physics does seem to be truly predictive, but unpacking "seems to" into something fully coherent unfortunately seems to be bring in horrible philosophical conundrums that were otherwise just minding their own business and willing to let us alone, namely the conundrums about free will. It seems as th...

Re: Certain people can't ever get it right

Fairly intelligent, but lazy enough so you just want to learn principles that stick once you have grasped them and are hard to forget (like being able to ride a bicycle), and no arbitrary facts to cram? Physics and maths is the way to go! Yes, but I am now suffering from this. My policy for many ye...

Re: When anonymous prophecies fail

QAnon has become this broad phenomena, and I think if there is one factor shared more than others, it's low education. Huh: yeah, maybe what I thought of as strong need for stupidity was really a need for low education. There's some correlation; I think that some kinds of education need more intell...

Re: Certain people can't ever get it right

I also don't see any real connection between the so-called heap paradox and infinity. Infinities are weird but they are not ill-defined the way heaps are. Maybe that's a connection in a way, though. From ample experience with language problems like the heap paradox, mathematics has learned never to ...

Re: When anonymous prophecies fail

I think we should hold the line on this one. Lyra will grow up and be able to fold laundry soon enough. Trust the plan.

Re: When anonymous prophecies fail

While kids are small the time seems endless but then afterwards it seems so short. Maybe that’s some endless now stuff. It may be worth making a point of playing some particular little kid games with Lyra just to lay up the memories. I once played fetch with our Marion when she had just gotten good ...

Re: Certain people can't ever get it right

I don't think the paradox of the heap has anything to with infinity. It's about how it can be tricky to define qualitative categories in quantitative terms. It seems reasonable to say that if a heap of sand truly counts as a heap, then removing one grain will still leave it as a pretty good heap. If...

When anonymous prophecies fail

There have been some news stories lately about the disappointment of QAnon followers when their prophesied "storm" didn't happen on 20 January 2021. I don't know much about QAnon but it seems like an interesting case study, at least if one is at a safe distance. There have been previous cases of gro...

When the machines rule the cosmos, our entire era will be nothing but "darkness on the face of the deep".

Re: The "Official" Witnesses Trailer Drops

It's true that the provenance of most Scriptures is hard to establish, and the real connection to their traditional writers is dubious. I think this only reinforces my point, though. It is not the case that everyone already firmly believed that Muhammed or Laozi was this awesome person whose every w...
