Hello Folks!

I decided to make a companion thread to one I saw posted in Paradise for those of us who regularly check SSP or prefer it for certain topics. Here, you can share what you're reading this summer. Feel free to include audio books and favorite podcasts.

I'm starting out with a devotional. That is NOT a signal to limit this thread to faith promoting material. That's not the purpose here. The purpose is to share and discuss within the guidelines of this particular forum. Share whatever you like, what you're reading, and don't forget to list what your children are reading!

90 Days Through the New Testament by Ron Rhodes

I picked this up months ago and ended up shelving it until now on account of in real life. In any case, I found it essentially stuffed with information regarding New Testament authors, comparison between authors, additional references that compliment, reinforce, or help to explain whatever topic is up for consideration and life applications--spiritual food for thought. If you're looking for a devotional that goes significant' deeper in effort than most and one that you can elect to follow a 90 day reading schedule or modify it to suit you, I highly recommend this!

I really like your topic but we're on our way out for a quick trip, so just a quick thought about summer reading to start... When I was a kid we had to stay in our Sunday clothes all Sunday, with no TV (except Sunday evening mutual of omaha's Wild Kingdom), no playing outside, no noisy games, no sewing or building hobbies, and no non-(Mormon) church books. (Chronicles of Narnia didn't count, sadly. Neither did A Wrinkle in Time. I tried.)

Going without real books was the biggest loss for me, so somehow I convinced my parents that reading the Encyclopedia qualified as a "church" read. Don't ask me how. I recall looking up a lot of religious articles so I might have implied I was only looking at those. But seriously, in all of god's creations, what topic does not reflect his Greatness?!!! I was persuasive, apparently. Or maybe just the most irritating child ever with the gift of a never-ceasing tongue.

Anyway, Encyclopedias became acceptable Sunday reading. The entries would always have a list at the end, in italics, of related articles, and I would sit on the floor at the end of the hall, next to the low bookcase containing our set, pick an article, then entertain myself by pulling out every volume corresponding to the related articles, reading those and pulling out the next set of volumes containing those related articles, until I was surrounded by every volume in the bookcase, open and piled up on the floor, happy as a pig in mud.

I have found out that you can take the girl out of the sunday-reading-restricted-encyclopedia-surfing Mormon home, but you can't take the encyclopedia-surfing out of the girl. Nothing is more relaxing, these days, than lounging in the pool on a hot Sunday afternoon, wifi-surfing any topic that catches my fancy, and using the internet version of "see also..." to extend the wave.

So that's the start of my summer reading.

I’m reading David Jeremiah’s The Great Disappearance. It is about The Rapture. The chapter I’m reading tonight is about children. 2 Samuel where David says, “ I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” After the child died, “David arose from the ground, washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped!” 2 Samuel:12:20. This is the part of the text I’m currently considering.

I’m also reading office furniture assembly directions— I’m almost finished, Jerz. Yes, it has taken a while. Sometime this fall, I’ll have to read 24 hours of continuing education material for license renewal. You know you’re getting old when you hope your CE material is something that helps you with your own health.

I grew up with World Book Encyclopedias. There were these companion books of sorts, and my favorites were the crafting book, and the one with poems, etc.

Someone I know personally wrote a book, Thort’s Epiphany, so I will probably be reading this book soon, now that DH has finished reading the book.
