Monson is the President of the Quorum of the 12. Traditionally, he should be the next prophet. Since he is one of the younger apostles, it is likely he will be the prophet for quite some time, provided he stays in good health.

Monson is not young. He is 80 or 81.

I was on the Metro this morning when I saw an article in the Washington Post (someone else's paper, LOL I'm nosy like that).

I guess, given his age and health it was inevitable, but still it was a shock.

I’m really impressed by the outpour of compassion and condolences. I’m a bit ashamed that I’m “impressed” by it, as it means that I have wrongfully underestimated some (for which I am sorry), but I’m also grateful for everyone who has put their problems with the “institution” and even its leadership aside to embrace their fellow humans in a time when they are mourning a loss of one of their ecclesiastical leaders.

Classy.

Ya know, we're all just doing the best we can with what we have been given. We're all part of the human family, and we have just lost one of our brothers who loved, and was loved by many, and anybody who brought love to many is a man who will be missed.

Hmmm. I know this is the Celestial forum and all, but I think I'm free to find disagreement here. I didn't even feel a twinge of loss nor compassion for any Mormon having just lost their "prophet". In fact, I browsed through the MAD thread on this subject, and all the talk of feeling like a family member had died, voids being left in souls, and 6-year-olds bursting into tears was a little much, and a little weird. My family is ultra-TBM, they don't get any TBMer. It was a day or two after when my mom mentioned it on the phone, "Did you know Pres. Hinckley died"? I mentioned that I'd heard. It was, "he was old and didn't suffer" and on to the next topic which was sorrow over some declining health of a couple family members and then to some very good family news. No hint of sadness over the prophet. None of my TBM siblings has brought it up in conversations either, nor any sadness detected. And they most certainly would bring it up if they were disturbed by it as they typically do not refrain from hiding their sadness from me. I take them as a fair sample. Even Nehor cites happiness.

So I 1) do not believe that most of the MAD participants really feel the loss they claim. I think some of it might even be to bait the critics. I will give them credit though for not making their baiting as obvious. Previously, on an LDS death, Juliann(?) would make a thread for "grieving LDS" and then one or more of the aggressive apologists would say something like, "I think we can expect the critics to...." and they didn't do that this time, I don't think. So I can give some credit. 2) The ones who do feel a deep personal loss here, need a shrink. sorry.
