In reading back over the Mark Hoffman forgery affairs and his sales/finds about the LDS Church I find it interesting that one lone voice questioned his 'too good to be true' finds.
Jerald Tanner, he of Utah Lighthouse Ministry.
Was he inspired, just naturally suspicious or what? As Mark Hoffman is supposed to have said "Jerald should have been one of his biggest supporters, not the one questioning the authenticity of his finds."
Jerald Tanner the one who thought Hoffman squirrly?

I think this fact is EXTREMELY EMBARRASSING to the church the fact that this bright young man decieved the top brass of the Church, men we believe have all the keys of discernment as Prophets Seers and Revelators, but more especially Seers, basically the best we had with some documents he forged in his basement, and to compound the embarrasment if that wasn't enough. The Churches leading Anti-Mormon at the time Jerald Tanner, was doubtful as to the documents authenticity.
I think this is one of the most embarrassing pictures in LDS journalistic history apart from pictures of the early brethen in jail for poligamy. I am sure the Church would rather this picture erased from existence. Things like this have taught me that Prophet Seers and Revelators are not what I initially thought they were, although I still believe they are all those things.
Over and over I have heard people say when they have met them they can see right through you, and read you like a book and such, however 5 of the best in the world at the time, couldn't detect Hoffman. I was always nervous as a boy about meeting any of the apostles, as I thought they would see all ones sins, but after I learned about Hoffman I am not worried, which is good I think as I have always wanted to shake the hand of one of these great goodly men. However I personally do not believe any of those men, are anything compared to Joseph Smith, I am supremely confident he would've detected Hoffman and his forgeries.

I think it just goes to show that the Tanners are more trustworthy and sincere in their search for the truth than most Mormons are ready to admit. It's much easier to see in black & white and paint the Tanner's as rabid, hateful, untrustworthy "anti-Mormons".Mahonri wrote:In reading back over the Mark Hoffman forgery affairs and his sales/finds about the LDS Church I find it interesting that one lone voice questioned his 'too good to be true' finds.

I believe the Tanners were the first to go public, but several Mormon scholars were privately expressing similar doubts at the same time. This information is accessible on the Net, but it would require some searching to find it. Time I don't have now.
