Jim Faulconer on Faith, Philosophy, and Scripture

Post by _Daniel Peterson »

Announcing an anthology of Mormon-related articles by BYU philosophy professor Jim Faulconer. At least some of them have been previously published, but this volume now brings them conveniently together:

James E. Faulconer, Faith, Philosophy, Scripture (Provo: Maxwell Institute, 2010)

Here are the titles of the articles included:

"Remembrance"

"Room to Talk: Reason's Need for Faith"

"A Mormon View of Theology: Revelation and Reason"

"Myth and Religion: Theology as a Hermeneutic of Religious Experience"

"Why a Mormon Won't Drink Coffee but Might Have a Coke: The Atheological Character of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"

"Rethinking Theology: The Shadow of the Apocalypse"

"The Writings of Zion"

"Scripture as Incarnation"

"On Scripture, or Idolatry versus True Religion"

"Breathing: Romans 8:1-17"

It is good to have you back Dr. Peterson. You offer something very unique that nobody else can provide.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Yes indeed.

I fasted and prayed to see the return of Brother Peterson to this wonderful Mormon discussions website.

I am very thankful my prayers were answered.

I say these things humbly in the name of Jesus Christ AMEN!

The trouble these days is that there is so much to read and only a certain amount of time and you have to pick and choose. I discovered this blog todau http://faith-theology.blogspot.com/ Another area to view and mine. I have see Faulconer on the http://www.patheos.com/Religion-Portals/Mormon.html. Theology has become a popular subject throughout the blogs. Some LDS writers are interesting like Joanna Brooks. I find Faulconer 's comments about creeds interesting. I wonder if he has read (the late) Jaroslav Pelikin's book on creeds and heard his presentation on Speaking of Faith http://being.publicradio.org/programs/p ... ript.shtml

Dr. Pelikan: My faith life, like that of every one else, fluctuates. There are ups and downs and hot spots and cold spots, and boredom and ennui and all the rest can be there. And so I'm not asked on a Sunday morning, "As of 9:20, what do you believe?" And then you sit down with a three-by-five index card saying, "Now let's see. What do I believe today?" No, that's not what they're asking me. They're asking me, "Are you a member of a community which now, for a millennium and a half, has said, 'We believe in one God'?"
