I have heard non-mormons explain that Mormonism attempts to remake the message of Jesus into an Old Testament framework. If true, that might lead to a Cosmic Hoary Thunderer with a schmear of muffin on the side.

1 Samuel 15:2-3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ... go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
Mat 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

And then we have poor little Issac trudging along with his dad Abraham to his own sacrifice. At the last moment, God says "just kidding". It makes God sound a bit insecure to me. It doesn't say how Issac dealt with the psychological trauma for the rest of his life.

Of course, this has always been the best take on the Old Testament god IMHO:
