I think the Washington Post writer is thinking that commonality in right-wing politics would somehow make Mormon's acceptable to conservative religionists. Instead it is that same group of conservative religionists who have the most disdain for the Mormon Church. While it is lamentable that the LDS Church has associated itself so deeply with any politics, there is a very pathetic quality to having bought into the same group that despises us the most. Our ability in this area is indeed peculiar in a kick me sort of way.

Do you watch Big Love?

The specter of a TBM in the White House brings to mind season five of Big Love, wherein a practicing Fundamentalist Mormon (a TBFM?) fights to serve out his term as a state representative in Salt Lake City. In the show, TBM politicians fear and despise the lone TBFM on Capitol Hill in the same way that some Evangelicals fear and despise TBMs.

It seems strange that Mormons (who excommunicate members who publicly deny the Church’s divinity) should seek acceptance from outsiders who likewise deny the Church’s divinity.

I doubt the Church will find much accommodation from outsiders until it offers similar accommodation to disaffected insiders. Latayne Scott (author of Latter-Day Cipher) is a good example of how the Church is its own worst enemy.
