Helping Hands Hypocrisy...?

Post by _jon »

How does the Church's Helping Hands programme, with self publicising tunics and press releases square with the Lords teachings in Mathew 6?

Matthew 6:2
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

An interesting comparison might be between the amounts of money spent on Humanitarian Aid and City Creek in relation to the amount of PR column inches the Church produces on each.

Methinks they have their reward...

Maybe it would help if they renamed the program "Shameless Public Relations Ploy Hands"

The T Shirts are a bit self promoting. On the other hand they work to help keep a group of workers together and easily identified. Does the Red Cross not use an emblem to be identified by when it goes into help in disaster areas?

Honestly I think critics look petty when they try to make hay out of the T Shirts. The LDS Church is putting $ into the disaster relief areas and the members are giving of their time and effort to help others out. So what if they were a stupid T Shirt that lets people know who they are and where they are from.

I have participated in "Helping Hands event" we drover across Texas to help clean up fallen trees.

When the "news" reported on the events of the weekend, guess who didn't get mentioned as participating....yep "the moooormons".

And yes, it is terribly petty to nit pick helping hands tshirts. If it makes you feel better I can send you mine.

another story, shortly after 9/11 a Lutherian group sponsored a interfaith event, the Mormons made the majority of the people there, and when the new media reported every faith in the county was mentioned, even the muslims....but not the Mormons

and what pr columns do you refer too?

Please refer and respond to the question in the OP about how specifically the Mormon Church squares it's self publicity (LDS Church news, Deseret News etc) of helping hands against the admonition in the scripture reference provided.
Thanks

So personal experience is not welcome when does not help accentuate ragging on the helping hands program? T-shirts for volunteers has been around for a long time in organizations far removed from the LDS Church.

The passage referred to personal acts of giving, etc.

Shirts do not seem to cross that line.

But if it does, so what?
