A majority of LDS do not care one whit about my personal characteristics that have made me vulnerable to persecution from the rest. And that majority would be alternatively appalled and incredulous at the depth of hatred of the rest.

In order to protect myself, I am forced to be on my toes, watching for behavioral characteristics associated with Mormonism. Yet I have some of them myself. I value sobriety and sexual restraint.

Surely you jest. Ordering a background check is tantamount to admitting that inspiration and discernment don't work.

CFR. This information is likely to be as accessible as the church's financial report.

Well, FLDS certainly lean towards child rape, bigamy, and welfare fraud...

LoL A very good thread. Thanks, Harm, for the inside insights.

I am currently involved in mentoring my son. This morning he accused me of being a Mormon. Well, if rejecting substance abuse is mormonish, so be it.

"Hi, my name is Igor. I work as a Procurement Specialist for the Transylvania aristocracy. In my spare time I like to catch flies and I'm a Mormon."

Impostor!!! My name is Renfield and I work as a Procurement Specialist for a Transylvanian royal named Vladimir Ţepeş the Drăculea. In my spare time I like to catch flies and I'm a Mormon.

I know who you are Igor. You work for that mad scientist Baron and attend the Bilderberg Ward. If you do not halt this impersonation, I will go directly to the administrator of this website and complain. You have been warned.

No. I consider one's religion, or lack thereof, is a wholly private matter.

The director of media for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had a different opinion - and I am certain it was not his private initiative.

You know, the message "This is who I am, and I am a Mormon."

Sounds like people freely sharing their beliefs which means it remains a wholly private matter; they do with it as they will.

So is there a public need or any need at all to know the religious affiliation of a person arrested for a crime?

Absolutely not. Just as there is no need for mention of a person's occupation, address, favorite sports team, how many siblings, children, shoe size, or political affiliation.
When a person is arrested, they are not convicted, so they still have quite a few privacy rights entitled to them.
I have not seen, heard, nor read any reasonable argument that would justify the authorities and/or media (1) asking an arrested person their religion nor (2) reporting that religion should it be known.
