What church?
Doesn't matter what church but within the context of this discussion I'm referring to the LDS church.
I can see a church which is interested in procreation in order to increase their numbers, not having much of an issue with porn in a hotel room.
If all procreation itself was about was the passing of of genetic material, then you might have a point.
The reason in this case the LDS church is interested in procreation is it increases its membership. If one looks at the world there are detrimental costs to increasing the populations with the limited resources of the earth. Due to the limited resources the earth has and concern for future humanity's well being people should be encouraged to have no more than 2 children so as to not increase the population which stands at 6 billions plus.
I think the main reason a church would be against porn at home is if males perhaps females use it alone, and in replacement to sexual relations with their spouse..because that might lead to the couple having fewer kids.
At this exceptionally facile level, I'm not sure if philosophcal discussion is even possible.
Good because I'm not impressed with the types of philosophical discussions I see on the net generally.
I'm not too sure about "a church," but the restored Church of Jesus Christ is against it because it corrupts and destroyes the true meaning and purpose of human sexuality,
I assume you think the true meaning and purpose of human sexuality is reproduction? That may be but is reproduction always beneficial? If the population of people grow exponentially..as the LDS church is encouraging...don't you think the earth's will not be able to sustain such large numbers in the not so distant future? Doesn't the Church care about the lives of humanity in the future? What benefits are obtained by increasing the earth's population? If reproduction is such a great thing for humans is it also wonderful that viruses and bacteria also reproduce..and why should they be killed off by mankind?
destroys the bonds, feelings, and sensitivities that bind men and woman together in the civilizing processes that lie at the core of the family, and hence, is ultimately a dagger aimed directly and deeply at the heart of the family itself.
Well I don't agree with you that that is the case with the vast majority of porn viewers. I have some issues with porn but for very different reasons than you.
And the family is the central organizing principle around which an peaceful, ordered, civil society is constructed.
Droopy I doubt there is evidence that porn destroys the "family" for the vast majority of porn viewers. Yes some people perhaps become addicted and it negatively affects their relationships just like some people also become addicted to a computer or alcohol and it negatively affects their relationships but for the vast majority of people this is not the case. For the vast majority porn increases sexual interest and response in spouses if they view it together, it's harmless if they view it by themselves, and it doesn't negatively impact relationship, for many it is even beneficial.
Now there is some porn I think is highly offensive to women, but I doubt couples watch that type of porn.
