Organized Prophetical System

Post by _moksha »

People have yakked on about whether the LDS have a systematic theology, but few have pointed out that we stand at the top of having an organized prophetical system.

Others have to stand around and wonder if they will be granted a prophet. From reading newspapers, magazines and watching TV, I have found many references to "prophets of doom". Seems like those apart from us LDS have something to fear from their prophets!

The LDS Church has an ongoing and steady supply of seasoned prophets, seers and revelators. That is what's right with Mormons.

I would be more impressed if I saw some seeing and revelating instead of the nonsense about tattoos, piercings, and the evils of porn and masturbation.

I think Moksha made this assertion as a trigger for discussion rather than an absolute statement. Put the word "Discuss." at the end of the OP and I think I have it...

My response:

"I disagree wtih the statement. The system of an endless stream of prophets who hold their positions for life. This creates an organization, culture and belief system which is highly resistant to change. It creates a set of leaders who may not be in touch with the current thought within their own membership, and it leads to intolerance for new ideas. I think it would be better if only the prophet stayed in there for life, and that the Q12 would stay there for terms so we could get new regularly. Keep the succession principles, but have the Q12 turning over in synch with federal elections (wink)"

That would give us a lot more prophetic people at the helm and the retirement age would be just about right except for Elder Bednar.

You know, this would assist with my predication from a number of years ago that one day Elder Daniel C. Peterson would be a General Authority.

I would like also to see a new department in the Church called the Church Fashion System. This group is responsible for monitoring trends in modern dress and culture, and changing the Handbook of Instructions to allow greater diversity in acceptable clothing when administering ward-level priesthood ordinances and Sunday dress.

Employees in this group could be called the Fashists.

Hi Moksha, perhaps you can post links to the latest examples of LDS prophecy, seership and revelations, plus if you have the time, translations, from any Prophet other than Joseph Smith.

Thanks

The leader of the group should be Dallin H. Oaks.
In another topic (viewtopic.php?p=517834#p517834) Darth J cites his words:
"modesty, which is an eternal value in the sense of rightness or wrongness in the eyes of God"

For example
Exodus 28 : 13-20 wrote:13. And thou shalt make ouches of gold;
14. And two chains of pure gold at the ends; of wreathen work shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathen chains to the ouches.
15. And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt thou make it.
16. Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.
17. And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.
18. And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
19. And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.
20. And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.

As we see, modesty is an eternal value in the eyes of God.

Off the top of my head, I would say setting the record straight on not knowing much about questionable past speculations - that seems the stuff of inspiration in my book. Wearing more than two pair of earrings was just an expression, of personal preference for less jewlery, as part of filling conference talk time. Not getting the Church mired in 2011 Presidential politics seems pretty inspired to me.

I bet some knowledgable LDS posters could answer this question with more precise detail than I can muster of what is currently being seen or revealed. One thing I can say, is that I trust the collective inspiration of these men to be my spiritual advisors.

The LDS seem to be following the same course as the RLDS but at a slower pace. Perhaps that is the result of having businessmen as leaders versus trained theologians.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."
