Follow the prophet?

Post by _searcher »

Is it true that "follow the prophet" is something that Joseph Smith Jr. would have never taught?

Mostly, Joseph Smith taught and he himself followed prophets, but there were times when he went in opposition to some who were considered prophet-like.

1) He accepted the entire Bible base - Jesus as human sacrifice scapegoat and all of those false prophet teachings.
Though he began a new religion, it was based on the warped Christian prophetic teachings.

2) He believed in the Book of Mormon prophets so much that he may have projected his own things.

3) He spoke as if he himself were God (in D&C etc) and demanded respect as if it was assumed that all would follow him. And of course many times he abused his power as "prophet."

Yet........
1) He didn't buy the BS of the many churches and got the answer (that I believe still applies today) that no "prophet" or other church leader has the one and only truth - they're just talk but their hearts are far from God.

2) He said (paraphrasing): "Search the scriptures and find what portion belongs to you" - in other words, realize the scriptures are writings of imperfect "prophets" so take the best and leave the rest. He started the Bof M with Nephi explaining his imperfection and disclaimer that if the reader finds fault, blame his weakness not God.

3) By word and deed he taught that the truth will carve itself - search for truth and incorporate it wherever it's found (this implies that it's not limited to just "church/prophet approved" sources.
