No I'm not an expert. But I've read a fair bit of Bernard Lewis. I don't think you need to be an expert to criticize the paragraph that is cited here. It's beyond the average bit of nonsense. My strengths are:
17th C Protestantism
Millerites
GPS history

That is a valid point. But as noted, my problem is I am such a rookie at Islam that I do not know who is good an who is not. Some think Armstrong is good, others think she is horrible. So how do I decide where to go to get educated on Islam? And as noted, I did not find Armstrong weak on Christian theology, and I am familiar enough with that I believe to judge.

I suggest that you start out by reading Bernard Lewis's What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East.

Buy everything written by Bernard Lewis, and then find out where he is wrong by reading everything by Daniel Pipes, Martin Kramer and Robert Spencer.

Armstrong doesn't know Arabic, so how can she analyze the early Muslim sources? She is an ex-Nun with an axe to grind against Christianity. What better way to bash Catholicism than to exhalt its historic enemy, Islam! She writes some of the worst nonsense, and recently Robert Spencer mopped the floors with her when she cited a verse from the Quran that didn't exist!
