for some reason I don't think this will be news outside of Utah - maybe Idaho and Arizona but not likely Iowa, New York or California.

(CNN) -- Mormon leader Gordon B. Hinckley died Sunday night at age 97, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints announced.

Gordon B. Hinckley, 97, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Sunday.

Hinckley served as president of the Salt Lake City-based church since 1995 and has been a member of its top leadership since the 1960s. He died about 7 p.m. Sunday (9 p.m. ET) with his family by his side, church officials announced.

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which becomes the nearly 13 million-member church's governing body upon the death of the president, will choose a successor after Hinckley's funeral.

No arrangements had been announced.

I am sorry for his family and those who were close to him... he lived a long life.

It is a sad day for all members of the church as well. He was beloved and with good cause. Sad, indeed.

You might be surprised how many Mormons there are in California.

I agree that people should not see him as gone but what a lucky guy to get 97 years and live in the Mormon spotlight with the perks. Most people do not even get 80 and die alone in a rest home or hospital.

Okay, I'm playing my violin here, but I hope, at least for a little while, we can all pay tribute to a great human being.

(Yes, I did meet him, and listened to him speak for several hours non-stop in an obscure chapel in Adelaide in 1976. When he entered all the missionaries stood up out of respect (he was a "young" apostle then), and Elder Hinckley said, "why are you standing? Sit down! Sit down!")

President Hinckley was a good man. He will be missed.

Monson is the President of the Quorum of the 12. Traditionally, he should be the next prophet. Since he is one of the younger apostles, it is likely he will be the prophet for quite some time, provided he stays in good health.

I can only hope I have 1/4 of my faculties as he had when I'm 70, let alone 97!!

We were called this evening via the ward phone tree. DH then called all our children. One of them had heard it already, via his wife's family. It's news, even this far outside of the Zion Curtain.
