i disagree, the scriptures have many instances where a "gift" is conditional..especially for the reception of one (i don't give birthday gifts without a birthday, at least). I am unfamiliar with the Hebrew of "gift", but not sure if that would help - as in gifts vs presents.

Imagine giving your wife/husband/significant other a gift at Christmas but saying "now dear, you can have this as long as you buy me that motorbike I want". What might be the reaction?

an absurd example.

It's actually more of a loan agreement. You can have the Holy Ghost's constant companionship providing you do x, y and z. Fail on that and we remove a portion of that companionship.

its not like that at all. to try and infer that one has no responsibility in one's relationship with Heavenly Father and His blessings is rather immature from a spiritual perspective.

How much is removed?
10%, 20%, 50%, 95%?
(It can't be 100% because even non member sinners are entitled to some companionship.
Or does that depend on what you haven't done?
Miss Sacrament meeting one week = 10% removal of the gift.
Miss Tithing one month = 50% removal of the gift.
Fail to resist self abuse = 95% removal.

to try and "quantify" notions of spirituality simply accentuate a misunderstanding of scripture, doctrine, and faith.

Is there a scale or is that one of those unknown things that aren't essential to know?

1 Cor 2:14

The jest about missing car keys is based on the inordinate amount of times people will credit the Holy Ghost with inspiring them to remember where they put them.

anecdotal apparently and not sure of the relevance, especially since i have no experience with what you are trying to convey.
If you haven't heard that at least 3 times a year at fast & testimony meeting then you either aren't a Mormon or you are the one member in the North East Kangiqsualujjuaq First Ward...

nope, not even one time a year, never heard it and i have been in meetings in Tennessee and Atlanta, seen a few General Conferences, read Ensign, etc.... And i am a Mormon.
What other people "credit" the HG with is of little relevance to this discussion.

1 Cor 2:14

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Not sure this helps us.

If the gift of the Holy Ghost refers to 'constant companionship' but un worthy non members get 'sporadic companionship', then sinning members must, by elimination get something in between. Then, if God is a just God, the level of sinning must be relevant to the level of companionship removed. Or is God inconsistent?

re-read 1 Cor 2:14
you pasted it and then proceeded to disregard what it speaks to.
Beyond this,
"the level of sinning must be relevant to the level of companionship removed."
what further clarification would be necessary?
exactly what understanding are you lacking? this concept is really very simple.

Fair play.
I was flogging a dead tapir two posts ago, should've stopped there.
