Stenhouse (Mr and Mrs) left in 1869, Ann Eliza left in 1872. Books go into hand-cart episode in depth.

Reformation was in 1856 and 1857. Hand-cart disaster was 1856.

From Brigham Young regarding Joseph Smith.
...with regard to any act of his life. He was God's servant, and not mine. He did not belong to the people but to the Lord, and was doing the work of the Lord, and if He should suffer him to lead the people astray, it would be because they ought to be led astray.

In considering the reliability of the Journal of Discourses, we should remember certain circumstances.

Though the First Presidency endorsed the publication of the Journal, there was no endorsement as to the accuracy or reliability of the contents. There were occasions when the accuracy was questionable. The accounts were not always cleared by the speakers because of problems of time and distance. This was especially true during the persecution of the 1880s which finally forced the cessation of publication.

We should remember that the times were different then. A major concern of the early Saints was physical survival. Sermons often dealt with the practical problems of the time and so may seem quaint in our day, even if much of the advice is still valid.

Doctrinally, members of the Church were growing and learning. Most adults were converts who had to unlearn and relearn many doctrines. They were learning things which our children learn in Primary and Sunday School. Remarks were frequently impromptu. Close, friendly audiences frequently invited informal discussion of varied topics. There was occasional speculation about doctrines which have since been determined unimportant or even misleading.

This was from 1978 before the internet and the use of the internet by anti-mormons. Good advice for today too.

The Counter Reformation also took aggressive and somewhat hostile measures against the followers of Luther and Calvin. The Church tried to counteract Protestantism by offering something more dramatic, emotional and sentimental to the faithful. For individuals unmoved by the appeal of the Jesuits and who still adhered to Protestant heresy, the Church resorted to more severe measures. The Inquisition, founded in the 13th century, expanded its activities and heretics were subject to punishment, torture and death. Keep in mind, however, that wherever Protestantism obtained official status -- England, Scotland, Geneva, Germany, and Scandinavia -- Catholics were persecuted.

One instrument that the Catholic Church had at its disposal was censorship. After 1520, the Church was quick to censor and burn books which might have spread the Protestant Faith. The Church intended to destroy all heretical literature: all Protestant books were burned; so too were the works written by reform-minded Catholic humanists; Petrarch and Erasmus had to go as well. The Index of Prohibited Books became an institution within the Church and was not abolished until 1966.

Now I am offended. Did the catholic church actually do this? Gosh...what a shock...it makes the JoD look tame in comparison.

You expect that sort of thing from the apostate whore of Babylon. But when the One True Church does it it's just "little flecks of history."

Catholics believe that they belong to one true church. At least MCB does. See the hypocrisy?

So it turns out that neither one is the one true church. Right?

It turns out that no church is perfect since people are not perfect. However, MCB seems to overlook catholic imperfections.

The JoD's have been around for a long time and they have been in many home libraries. And as the ensign from 1978 demonstrates, widely read. No problem until the internet and the antimormon twist to the JoD.
