I think the credibility of Smith is the core issue of Mormonism. All other issues are moot if, as most believe, the man was an out and out fraud and conman of the highest order. The salvation of Mormons rests firmly on the issue of his credibility whether they see that or not since their theology, belief and practice are built upon his claims.

What do you know about the credibility of those who wrote any of the books in the Old Testament or New Testament ?

Exactly. We certainly do know a great deal about Smith however
, his treasure seeking, water witching, glass looking, for which he was convicted. In any court of law they would be telling indicators to character and a good prosecuting attorney would be remiss in not using them. At the risk of quoting pop culture...past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior.
