Mittens wrote:LDS claim that the true church must be built upon the foundation of apostles and prophets. But, the LDS church did not have twelve apostles until five years after their church was organized! Do builders build a building for five years before laying the foundation? The LDS began ordaining their first twelve apostles on February 14, 1835 (D.H.C. Vol. II, pp. 180-200).

Strange.... Why do you condemn Christ Himself??? Woe unto you ye BLASPHEMER!!! (sarcasm)
After all, even HE ordained the original Apostles WELL AFTER he started his "Church".

Further, what you forget is that the "foundation" of Christ's Church is built on the foundation of the Apostles, but Christ is STILL the "Chief Cornerstone". In other words, THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE IS LAID FIRST, BEFORE THE FOUNDATION!!!!

Even further, just as in Christ's time before the Apostleship was organized, there were those set apart as "High Priests" or "Elders" of the Church. THEN in 1835 Peter, James, & John established the "Key's" of the Apostleship, and the foundation was laid.

The "three witnesses" of the B. of M. (who later apostatized) were elders and high priests in the LDS Church when they ordained the "twelve" to the higher office of "apostle."

Yes, all DID "apostatize" from the Church, but two of them also came back.
More importantly, NOT A SINGLE ONE ever denied their witness and experiences.

by the way, neither did the 8 Witnesses.....

Mormons today cannot ordain someone to a higher office than what they themselves hold. The three witnesses of the B. of M. conferred the office of apostle on the twelve by "the laying on of hands" as they prayed prophetic prayers over each man separately. The apostleship they conferred is just as valid as their prophetic prayers given as they ordained the first LDS apostles.

Actually, Christ laid his hands on Peter, James and John, then they laid their hands on Joseph and Oliver, and then THEY ordained various Apostles.

The following are some of those prophecies recorded in the D.H.C., Vol. II, pp. 188-191.

Boring..... I've already debunked your entire argument. No need to waste my time getting into the details of your misrepresentations. FYI, the same things occur in the Bible, yet like the [personal attack deleted] you are, you don't condemn those Prophets, Apostles, etc.

Oh dear another 'Mormon' who has either been misled or is [non-Celestial insinuation deleted].

Firstly, when asked they said they saw with their 'SPIRITUAL' eyes.

David Whitmer said in 1887: "If you believe my testimony to the Book of Mormon; if you believe that God spake to us three witnesses by his own voice, then I tell you that in June, 1838, God spake to me again by his own voice from the heavens, and told me to 'separate myself from among the Latter-day Saints...'" What did Jesus Say ? Doesn't matter what I think !

I don't know. And you don't either. There's no good reason to believe that the words attributed to Jesus, penned several decades later, by people who were not there, were actually uttered by a man named Jesus at all.

Making decisions about marriage, divorce, etc. by parsing the hearsay of dubious provenance that one finds in the New Testament is truly a fool's game.

It took a while. The Church (Catholic) weighed in heavily on this subject for quite some time. You might say that the calculations of Copernicus and Galileo trumped Jesus too, if you add in a nit-picky interpretation of the Gospel of love and the philosophies of willingly chaste men, who had to content themselves being surrounded by only young male acolytes.

MCB wrote:Why marry, when divorce is always an option, and therefore the parties do not try to work out their differences by submitting to each other?

Why remain married, when one of the partners abandons the other? Is the abandoned one to remain forever celibate from that point on, because that union, which now exists in name only, cannot be dissolved?

Enforced unseverability of marriage just compounds the problem.

Well, Western Civilization at least actually exists/has existed.

I'll make you a deal. Get Jesus to come back, out of the sky or whatever, and tell us all himself what he wants, and I'll definitely reconsider my opinions. So long as all we get from Jesus is a bunch of wannabe prophets trying to tell us all how Jesus deputized them to tell us all his will, you can forget it. That trick is getting old. It has kept religious charlatans and hucksters in business for centuries, nay, millenia.
