- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco - To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei
I received this on my blog from someone (Mike MacKay) that works at the Joseph Smith Papers,
Gerrit Dirkmaat and I have included the Hicks photo in the Joseph Smith Papers volume, which is being released in a matter of weeks. Along with Robin Jensen, we have also fleshed when it was originally created along with an in depth analysis on the handwriting in the forth coming issue of Mormon Historical Studies. Though they have beat you to the punch line, it will be interesting to see if they all come to the same conclusion.
They seem obsessed that they have "beaten me to the punch" when they haven't even released anything yet. Also, I've been working on this since last year and my article is almost 200 pages long (with notes).
And I'll give a teaser here, the handwriting on the document as I've identified, belongs to John & Christian Whitmer.

It was either David or John Whitmer. I believe it was John and I have some evidence to prove that. It's from a source that Dan Vogel thinks is unreliable though, but I don't think the part of his statement that I use is.

Is this photo cropped, or is there just the beginning of the 3 lines available?
"The Book of... Generation... Adam..." Do you think that relates to the "translation" of the caractors? What immediately springs to mind is the discussion of generations from Adam to Noah contained in the Lectures on Faith that were, If I recall correctly, based on lectures to the School of the Prophets.
I have lots of questions, but I will await your paper before pestering you.

It's from the Book of Moses. The photo is not cropped, the page was folded. The phrase (or title actually) is "The Book of the Generations of Adam". And it's not a translation of the Book of Mormon characters.

Does that mean the Book of Moses was originally written in "Reformed Egyptian"? Like the Book of Mormon?
Surprise, surprise, there is no divine mandate for the Church to discuss and portray its history accurately. --Yahoo Bot

Not that I know of.
