Moses 6 8 Now this prophecy Adam spake, as he was moved upon by the Holy Ghost, and a genealogy was kept of the children of God. And this was the book of the generations of Adam, saying: In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 9 In the image of his own body, male and female, created he them, and blessed them, and called their dname Adam, in the day when they were created and became living souls in the land upon the footstool of God. 10 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his own image, and called his name Seth. Mormon Historical Studies has just published their take on the Caractors Document, and they attribute the entire document to John Whitmer. Unfortunately, they don't have it right. They are missing some key evidence. They must have really hurried this article into print.

Grindael: I was under the impression that the title "caracters" at the top of the document has already been analyzed by several experts and that they had come to the conclusion that it was Joseph Smith's handwriting. Am I wrong?
I have a photography question for you. Please check your private messages.
Thanks,

I checked my message box, but didn't see anything. I'm happy to answer any question I can about historic process photography, assuming it's something I know about.

Yes. It is not Joseph Smith. I was leaning towards John Whitmer, but Brent thinks it is Jesse Gause (perhaps - if the program description is accurate), of which I cannot speak because I have had no handwriting sample to compare with, as Brent obviously has. And he told me the whole document is written by the same person.
The bottom half of the document is definitely not John Whitmer, because of some peculiarities especially with the capital G. It matches with the unknown scribe from the Book of Mormon, that I think is Christian Whitmer (the other being John). But I'm confident Brent has cracked this. (If he says so I believe him).

A man of stable faith. Quaker - Shaker - Mormon...
One of JS's skyrockets. - baptized: some time after Oct, 1831 - counselor of president: March 8, 1832 - excommunicated: Dec 8, 1832
- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco - To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei
Gause's role in Mormon history went unacknowledged for decades. The revelation given to him in 1832 was altered by replacing his name with his replacement in the First Presidency, Frederick G. Williams. His name was only recognized in the 1980 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants, but then only in the historical introduction to the revelation; his replacement's name remained in the text itself. Only after historians demonstrated his role in the formation of the Mormon hierarchy, beginning with Robert J. Woodford in 1975 and D. Michael Quinn in 1983, was his name restored to the church's list of General Authorities.
In other words, the holy scripture known as the Doctrine & Covenants was utterly wrong and went uncorrected until the latter 1980's.
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)
