the same principle is at play when Nephi is told to kill Laban. Thou shalt not kill/kill Laban. Keeping a handle on good is not so easy as a set of written rules. That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be, and often is right under another. Joseph Smith it is a life long pursuit

Would you lie to save your friends' life?

I think many are missing the big picture here. What these stories do is to tell people it is right to do whatever God commands. Joseph changes Abraham's story a little bit that God told him to lie. Remember that God also commanded Abraham to kill his son and the moral of the story is that Abraham was doing the right thing in trying to kill his son because God told him to. Joseph did this as well with the Nephi killing Laban story. Nephi was good and righteous because he followed God's command to kill an unconscious man. The Bible has these stories of Commanding the people to go and kill another group. Even children.

The common theme is do what God tells you. In reality this is not meant to have people go off on their own as to what God wants. Most know they don't have an idea of what God wants, but believe and have been taught to accept someone else as God mouthpiece. What better way to get people to do what you want as leader. This is what Joseph is doing, and what people in the past have done. Easier to convince the believer this is what God wants and not what I want when they are trying to have sex with you. An angel with a burning sword threatened me if I didn't. You got to help me out or I will die. God will kill me if I don't raise 6 million dollars. Etc etc etc.

I wasn't trying to answer a question we all know the answer to. It misses the important point I brought up.

The Old Testament is filled with examples of God going against His own instructions. For example: Thou shalt not kill. There are other instances in the Bible where God has instructed Prophets to purposefully lie in addition to what He told Abraham. In fact, when the people had desires for iniquity, God instructed the Prophets to give the people what they wanted. As such, the people were given things that simply were not a manifestation of "real" powers, gifts, special considerations, etc. They were disguised under the auspices of religion. They were an illusion; but the people are blind to that illusion. It seems that Joseph Smith wasn't doing anything different.

Then you did miss the point. The Bible is full of the ideas that God commands override anything else. Religious leaders use this to maintain power and get adherents to do things they would not normally do. These stories are meant to teach this kind of obedience. Abraham's story of sacrificing his son is just one. Nephi killing an unconscious man is another. These stories are meant to teach believers to follow God or his chosen messenger. Joseph used this to get sex. I wouldn't do that. Very few people think they know what God wants and depend on their leaders to tell them. This is the idea of a prophet. It's the perfect system for the fraud. Ever hear of lying for the lord? It's used to justify all kinds of bad things like sleeping with women because you told them an angel threatened you if you didn't.

Compare the Book of Abraham to Genesis and you find that some careless or naughty scribe must have changed the correct original (Book of Abraham) into a mistranslated passage in Genesis that gives Abraham the credit for God commanding him to lie. Good thing Joseph Smith gave us the real story.

Gospel Principle lesson 31 clearly teaches this was a lie

That's why I believe God has to be a God of truth. How can one trust a God who lies? A church which represents God should be the most honest institution on earth.
