I think he was more of a "son of a Birch". Benson was a proponent of the John Birch Society, but he was never a member. David O. McKay was probably the influence that politely, but firmly, did not want an apostle to be a member of those "Sons of Birches".

My favorite ETB moment was when he was on a third party campaign for the White House with Strom Thurmond. A telling combination. I also enjoyed his little bots at the Freemen Institute and their hissing about the CFR and Trilateral Commission.

After the Benson-Thurmond campaign fizzled, Ezra Taft wanted to run as Vice President on the White Power ticket with Gov. George Wallace, but President McKay said no to that request. If only the request had suggested that George Wallace was actually a Greek Lamanite, things may have turned out differently after President McKay quit laughing.
