Interestingly, the current UK government is a coalition between Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. I think this piece of the agenda is driven, in part, as an appeasement to keep the Liberals onside in other areas.

The Government is absolutely committed to it though and so it will, ultimately, come to a head. It did when civil unions were introduced. The Government is selling the position that it is a Civil Marriage that they are advocating and Religions will still have autonomy on Religious Marriage.

On a personal basis, I am a bit of a liberal by nature, so I can't say that I'm against what the Government is seeking to do.

Isn't the "Conservative" Party in England still about as liberal as American Democrats?

They are more liberal than they used to be, or want be, but the arranged marriage with the Lib Democrats means they have to make concessions. Arguably the country gets a better governance as a result.

all else being equal - we think, and most data supports, the pecking order is as follows:
1. happily married biological parents
2. everybody else
3. grandparents
4. same sex parents
5. left in the forest covered in bacon with no parents

(though arguably one could put lesbian parents at #2, but gay parents still must stay at #4 - though both are still at risk from the previously mentioned and alleged "social injustice" that so many claim is a "plague upon us")

as i said, the lesbian parents would have a good argument for #2, but there are still a few issues to ascertain, such as the effects on gender identity and influence on relationship behavior. Gay parents would likely stay in same location....too many cards still stacked against them.
Ultimately, i speculate, that the more data becomes available the more we will discover the psychological inadequacies of the LGBT impact children and how overwhelming the benefits are (still are) to have opposite sex parents.
