Great catch, CCC.
"Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys."
by the way: No where in the Bible does it claim the earth is 6000 years old. SEE Bishop James Ussher Sets the Date for Creation: October 23, 4004 B.C. When Clarence Darrow prepared his famous examination of William Jennings Bryan in the Scopes trial, he chose to focus primarily on a chronology of Biblical events prepared by a seventeenth-century Irish bishop, James Ussher.

According to the assumption of natural happenstance.
According to objective evidence (which is the best we have, the kind that we can all agree upon) which evidence comes from many independent processes all in agreement with one another. That consilience makes the case without the need to lean upon assumptions. Or to put it more directly the scientific method minimizes the use of assumption, whereas religion depends 100% upon assumption and assertion. It remains propped up by assumption even in the face of overwhelming (objective) evidence to the contrary.
However, such excludes any notion of forethought by a superior designer.
Let's see that forethought goes something like, "I will make trees with rings marking growth during seasons that never occurred. I will make stars visible in the night sky with photons that never originated from those stars, created in transit. Heck, I could save a lot of work by not creating the stars themselves. A few tens of thousands of years will never be enough time to reveal my lazy workings to mankind. I will create the appearance of age but behold I will contradict myself in this creating things with the appearance of age. Why not? I can do what ever I want, I'm god the greatest of all. I will create the earth with a decaying magnetic field that some will see as the appearance of youth. I will create polonium halos that some will see as the appearance of youth. I will put C14 into things that I created with the appearance of age like diamonds so as to have the appearance of youth. Behold I am the god of confusion and disorder. Bow down and worship me or I'll torture you for all eternity!"
Kolob’s set time is “one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest” (Abraham 3:4). I take this as a round number. - Gee

Would GOD create Adam 30 years of age and with a navel? Why not? Adam was the prototype for the future! The rings of a tree make it stronger and more structurally stable and the prototype. Just like GOD would create the strata of the earth so it would function according to the nature GOD put into place. Why did GOD create the stars? Have you never gazed at a star filled sky in wonder? The heavens were to be signs of times and seasons and to fill us with wonder at their beauty. Can man live on the surface of the sun? How much more glorious is GOD? Man has changed due to Adam's sin. Nature has changed due to Adam's sin. We are the end result of sin. We cannot live with GOD unless HE transforms us. And HE does this only through Christ. In eternity the redeemed in Christ will be as GOD originally intended so that one may once again embrace GOD. Uniformitarians/evolutionists and atheists simply ignore all this to promote their own epic devoid of GOD. GOD is the key data missing from their equations.

Quite. The key data is missing. Care to provide it?
