What was the Church's solution to people baptising celebrities etc?
That's right, ban the whistle blowers from being able to see the records.

Your opinions and statements have done nothing to refute the scholarly sources and statements that I have written.

You have no scholarly sources. There is no such thing as a (non-LDS) "scholarly source" for baptism of the dead. The only potential reference is in a single letter of Paul's, wherein Paul is chastising the congregation for adopting pagan practices.

Fail. Fail. Fail.

gdemetz, I am puzzled. What scholarly sources are there for my suggestion that the Mormon Church is not being honest in blaming individual members for famous names being submitted for baptism for the dead?

I am wondering the same thing. What legitimate sources would state that the church is to blame for that when the church put out guidelines long ago to its members regarding the proper procedure.

So it's the members fault. Got it.

Given that those guidelines have clearly been unfit for purpose in terms of regulating the process and preventing PR debacle after PR debacle (think Ann Frank etc), what should the Church do other than try to find a way to hide the records from further scrutiny?
