Proverbs 4:1-27
Listen, children, to a father’s discipline, and stay tuned so that you may gather understanding, for I am providing good instruction.

Don’t abandon my teaching.

When I was a little boy with my dad, tender and precious to my mother, King David trained me and said: “Your heart must absorb my words. Keep my commands and live.

Gain wisdom and understanding; don’t forget or turn away from the words of my mouth.

Don’t abandon wisdom, and wisdom will look after you; love wisdom, and wisdom will protect you.

Wisdom is paramount—so gain wisdom. And whatever else you gain, make it also understanding.

Cherish understanding, and you will be uplifted. Embrace understanding, and you will gain honor.

Understanding will bring a wreath of grace for your head and a crown of beauty.”

Listen, my child. Accept my words, and you will add years to your life.

I am teaching you the way of wisdom; I am leading you along straight paths.

As you walk through life, your steps will not be hindered; when you run, you will not trip.

Hold on to instruction; don’t let go. Guard it, for this means life.

Don’t follow the wicked; don’t behave like those who are evil.

Avoid such at all costs don't follow them. Turn away, and pass them by.

For they can’t rest unless they commit evil. They are robbed of sleep unless they undermine the lives of others.

They nourish wickedness and are quenched with violence.

The path of the righteous is like daybreak, shining brighter and brighter until high noon.

But the way of the wicked is like dark shadows; they don’t realize what trips them up.

My child, listen to my sayings closely.

Don’t lose sight of them; store them in your heart.

For they bring life to those who discover them, and health to the entire body.

Guard your heart above all else, for it emanates life.

Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don’t spread lies.

Let your eyes look at what's ahead and fix your gaze straight ahead.

Carefully consider the direction for your feet, and all your actions will be established.

Don’t turn this way and that. Don't walk along with evil.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Hear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.

2 For good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.

3 For, a son I have been to my father -- tender, And an only one before my mother.

4 And he directeth me, and he saith to me: `Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.

5 Get wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.

6 Forsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.

7 The first thing [is] wisdom -- get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.

9 She giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.

10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life [are] multiplied to thee.

11 In a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.

12 In thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.

13 Lay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she [is] thy life.

14 Into the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.

15 Avoid it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.

16 For they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not [some] to stumble.

17 For they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.

18 And the path of the righteous [is] as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,

19 The way of the wicked [is] as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.

20 My son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,

21 Let them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.

22 For life they [are] to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.

23 Above every charge keep thy heart, For out of it [are] the outgoings of life.

24 Turn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,

25 Thine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways [are] established.

27 Incline not [to] the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!

Proverbs 5:1-23 My child, stay attuned to my wisdom, cue your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.

The lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is slicker than oil; but in the end she is a bitter pill to swallow, and as sharp as a double-edged sword.

Her feet are tombstones; her steps lead straight to a grave.

She doesn't think about her behavior. Unaware her paths wander aimlessly.

Now then, children, listen to me. Don't forget what I say.

Stay out of her way her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you lose your honor among others and your dignity to the cruel, lest strangers consume your wealth and your toil enrich the estate of another.

Towards the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body grow old.

You will then say, “How I remember hating discipline and my heart spurned correction!

I would not obey my teachers nor turn my ear towards those who would warn me.

Quickly I discovered that I was in serious trouble in the community.

Drink water from your own rain barrel and running water from your own well.

Don't act like a public fountain.

Let it be yours alone, never to be shared among strangers.

May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in your original wife.

As a loving doe with a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a shared whore?

Your behavior is in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths.

The evil deeds of the wicked are addictive; the cords of their sins hold them captive.

For lack of discipline they die, led astray by their own great folly.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 My son! to my wisdom give attention, To mine understanding incline thine ear,

2 To observe thoughtfulness, And knowledge do thy lips keep.

3 For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, And smoother than oil [is] her mouth,

4 And her latter end [is] bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a sword [with] mouths.

5 Her feet are going down to death, Sheol do her steps take hold of.

6 The path of life -- lest thou ponder, Moved have her paths -- thou knowest not.

7 And now, ye sons, hearken to me, And turn not from sayings of my mouth.

8 Keep far from off her thy way, And come not near unto the opening of her house,

9 Lest thou give to others thy honour, And thy years to the fierce,

10 Lest strangers be filled [with] thy power, And thy labours in the house of a stranger,

11 And thou hast howled in thy latter end, In the consumption of thy flesh and thy food,

12 And hast said, `How have I hated instruction, And reproof hath my heart despised,

13 And I have not hearkened to the voice of my directors, And to my teachers have not inclined mine ear.

14 As a little thing I have been all evil, In the midst of an assembly and a company.

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, Even flowing ones out of thine own well.

16 Let thy fountains be scattered abroad, In broad places rivulets of waters.

17 Let them be to thee for thyself, And not to strangers with thee.

18 Let thy fountain be blessed, And rejoice because of the wife of thy youth,

19 A hind of loves, and a roe of grace! Let her loves satisfy thee at all times, In her love magnify thyself continually.

20 And why dost thou magnify thyself, My son, with a stranger? And embrace the bosom of a strange woman?

21 For over-against the eyes of Jehovah are the ways of each, And all his paths He is pondering.

22 His own iniquities do capture the wicked, And with the ropes of his sin he is holden.

23 He dieth without instruction, And in the abundance of his folly magnifieth himself!

Proverbs 6:1-35

My child, if you put up a security for your friend or shake hands with a stranger, you are bound by your pledge.

In order to free yourself; when you owe a friend, go and humble yourself; plead with your friend.

Do not sleep on this, but handle the matter as quickly as possible.

Deliver yourself as a doe from the hand of the hunter (FLEE), and as a bird from the hand of the fowler (FLY).

Take a pointer from the ant you lazybones! Consider her behavior and be wise.

Thought, having no guide, supervisor, or CEO, provides its meal in the summer, and gathers provisions in the harvest.

How long will you sleep, lazybones? When will you get motivated?

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep— so will your poverty come upon you like a stalker, and your need as an armed man.

A wayward person, a wicked man, goes hand in hand with a foul mouth.

He winks with his eyes, he signals with his feet, he motions with his fingers; he is perverted to the core, he plans mischief continually, he stirs up trouble.

As a result, his calamity will come suddenly; in an instant he will be broken without recourse.

These six things the Lord hates, even, seven are an abomination to him:

Self-righteous pride,
The liar,
Murderers of those that have done nothing wrong,
Those that concoct evil ideas
People that are swift in making mischief,
A false witness who make lying accusations
And he who seeks to encourage his associates to feel unsatisfied.

My child keep your dad's commandment, and do not treat lightly what your mother says.

Ponder them often, and may others note them openly.

When you go, they will lead you; when you sleep, they will be of comfort; and when you awake, they will speak with you.

For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light; and instructional reprimand leads one in the direction of life, to divert you from the evil woman, from the insincere flattery of a seductress.

Do not lust after her gorgeous body in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

For through a harlot a man is reduced to having nothing but a scrap of bread. and the adulteress will ruin his precious life.

Can a man hold fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be charred?

Can one walk upon openly hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

So he who fools around with his neighbor’s wife; whoever touches her in not innocent.

Do not despise a thief if he steals because he is hungry.

But if he is found, he will restore seven times; he will give up all he posesses.

But whoever commits adultery lacks understanding; anyone who commits it destroys his own soul.

Injury and dishonor will he gain, and his reproach will not go away.

For jealousy causes rage; therefore, no vengeance will be spared.

He will not Contemplate a ransom, and he will not be content, though you try to bribe him.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 My son! if thou hast been surety for thy friend, Hast stricken for a stranger thy hand,

2 Hast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,

3 Do this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,

4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,

5 Be delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.

6 Go unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;

7 Which hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,

8 She doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.

9 Till when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,

11 And thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.

12 A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking [with] perverseness of mouth,

13 Winking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,

14 Frowardness [is] in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.

15 Therefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken -- and no healing.

16 These six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven [are] abominations to His soul.

17 Eyes high -- tongues false -- And hands shedding innocent blood --

18 A heart devising thoughts of vanity -- Feet hasting to run to evil --

19 A false witness [who] doth breathe out lies -- And one sending forth contentions between brethren.

20 Keep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.

21 Bind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.

22 In thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked -- it talketh [with] thee.

23 For a lamp [is] the command, And the law a light, And a way of life [are] reproofs of instruction,

24 To preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

25 Desire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.

26 For a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.

27 Doth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?

28 Doth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?

29 So [is] he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.

30 They do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,

31 And being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.

32 He who committeth adultery [with] a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.

33 A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,

34 For jealousy [is] the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.

35 He accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!

Proverbs 7:1-27
My child, remember what I say and store up my commands.

Keep my commands and you'll have a life; guard my teachings as your center of focus.

Keep them at your fingers tips; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Be familiarly united with wisdom and insight

They'll keep you from the adulterous woman, from the perverse woman with her seductive words.

From my widow I peered through the blinds.

Among the commoners I noticed the young men and particularly a youth who had no sense.

He was headed down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house --- it was twilight, as the day was fading, and evening was setting in.

Then out came the woman to meet him, dressed like a floozy and with evil plans.

(She is a troublemaker and a hussy, her feet never stay home; now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.)

She grabbed hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said:

“Today I fulfilled God's required vows. I even have food from my fellowship offering at home.

So I came specifically for you; I looked for you and have found you!

I have covered my bed with fancy imported linens.

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.

Come, let’s rock till morning; let’s enjoy ourselves with love!

My husband isn't home; he's away on a trip.

He took his credit cards and will not be home till the full moon.”

With persuasive words she lead him by the nose; she seduced him with her smooth talk.

Suddenly he followed her like an ox for the market, like a deer stepping into a noose.

Then an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, naïvely ruining his life.

Now my sons, listen to me and pay attention!.

Do not let your heart turn In her direction.

Many are the victims she has ruined --- her list is long.

Her house is an expressway to the grave, leading down to the death chambers.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 My son! keep my sayings, And my commands lay up with thee.

2 Keep my commands, and live, And my law as the pupil of thine eye.

3 Bind them on thy fingers, Write them on the tablet of thy heart.

4 Say to wisdom, `My sister Thou [art].' And cry to understanding, `Kinswoman!'

5 To preserve thee from a strange woman, From a stranger who hath made smooth her sayings.

6 For, at a window of my house, Through my casement I have looked out,

7 And I do see among the simple ones, I discern among the sons, A young man lacking understanding,

8 Passing on in the street, near her corner, And the way [to] her house he doth step,

9 In the twilight -- in the evening of day, In the darkness of night and blackness.

10 And, lo, a woman to meet him -- (A harlot's dress, and watchful of heart,

11 Noisy she [is], and stubborn, In her house her feet rest not.

12 Now in an out-place, now in broad places, And near every corner she lieth in wait) --

13 And she laid hold on him, and kissed him, She hath hardened her face, and saith to him,

14 `Sacrifices of peace-offerings [are] by me, To-day I have completed my vows.

15 Therefore I have come forth to meet thee, To seek earnestly thy face, and I find thee.

16 [With] ornamental coverings I decked my couch, Carved works -- cotton of Egypt.

17 I sprinkled my bed -- myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18 Come, we are filled [with] loves till the morning, We delight ourselves in loves.

19 For the man is not in his house, He hath gone on a long journey.

20 A bag of money he hath taken in his hand, At the day of the new moon he cometh to his house.'

21 She turneth him aside with the abundance of her speech, With the flattery of her lips she forceth him.

22 He is going after her straightway, As an ox unto the slaughter he cometh, And as a fetter unto the chastisement of a fool,

23 Till an arrow doth split his liver, As a bird hath hastened unto a snare, And hath not known that it [is] for its life.

24 And now, ye sons, hearken to me, And give attention to sayings of my mouth.

25 Let not thy heart turn unto her ways, Do not wander in her paths,

26 For many [are] the wounded she caused to fall, And mighty [are] all her slain ones.

27 The ways of Sheol -- her house, Going down unto inner chambers of death!

Proverbs 8:1-36
Wisdom is Yelling! Understanding is raising her voice!

On the bluffs along the road, at an intersection she is standing;

By the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries loudly:

“People, I am calling you, lifting my voice to everyone.

You who don’t have direction or comprehend caution, you fools, get some common sense!

“Listen! I say important things. What I pronounce is correct.

My mouth says what is true --- detesting evil.

All my words are righteous; nothing false or crooked is in them.

They are all clear to those who understand and straightforward to those who seek knowledge.

Take my instruction, rather than silver; knowledge, rather than the finest gold.

Wisdom is better than pearls; nothing desired compares with her.

Wisdom goes hand in hand with caution; gleaning both knowledge and discretion.

The regard of the Lord is the hatred of evil. Wisdom hates pride and arrogance,
evil ways and deceitful speech.

Good advice comes along with wisdom --- also common sense, insight, and strength.

By wisdom kings reign, and rulers make just laws.

Through wisdom princes can govern, nobles too, and all earth’s rulers.

Wisdom surrounds those who love wisdom; and those who seek wisdom will find her.

Riches and honor are belong to wisdom ---- permanent wealth and righteousness.

The end result of wisdom is better than fine gold, her produce better than the finest silver.

Wisdom follows the course of righteousness along the paths of justice, to bestow wealth upon those who love wisdom --- filling their accounts.

The Lord designed wisdom as the beginning of His plan, the first of His ancient works.

Wisdom was established before the world, before the beginning, before the earth’s creation.

When wisdom was established, there were no ocean depths, no springs bubbling with water.

Wisdom was brought forth before the hills sank, and before the mountains were thrust upwards;

God had not yet made the earth, the fields, or even the earth’s atoms.

When God established the heavens, wisdom was there. When God drew the horizon’s circle on the water,

when God set the skies above in place, when the fountains of the gushed forth,

when God prescribed boundaries for the sea, so that its water would not transgress His command, when God mapped out the support for the earth,

Wisdom was with Him as would be a trusted soul. With wisdom, everyday is pure delight, as wisdom played in God's presence all the time,.

Skipping around everywhere on His earth, and delighting to be with humankind.

Therefore, children, listen to wisdom: happy are those who keep her directions.

Listen to instruction, and grow wise; do not reject it.

Contented is the person who listens to wisdom, who considers daily and hangs outside of wisdoms door.

For he who discovers wisdom finds life and obtains the favor of the Lord.

He who passes on wisdom harms himself; all who despise wisdom enjoy death.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Doth not wisdom call? And understanding give forth her voice?

2 At the head of high places by the way, Between the paths she hath stood,

3 At the side of the gates, at the mouth of the city, The entrance of the openings, she crieth aloud,

4 `Unto you, O men, I call, And my voice [is] unto the sons of men.

5 Understand, ye simple ones, prudence, And ye fools, understand the heart,

6 Hearken, for noble things I speak, And the opening of my lips [is] uprightness.

7 For truth doth my mouth utter, And an abomination to my lips [is] wickedness.

8 In righteousness [are] all the sayings of my mouth, Nothing in them is froward and perverse.

9 All of them [are] plain to the intelligent, And upright to those finding knowledge.

10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold.

11 For better [is] wisdom than rubies, Yea, all delights are not comparable with it.

12 I, wisdom, have dwelt with prudence, And a knowledge of devices I find out.

13 The fear of Jehovah [is] to hate evil; Pride, and arrogance, and an evil way, And a froward mouth, I have hated.

14 Mine [is] counsel and substance, I [am] understanding, I have might.

15 By me kings reign, and princes decree righteousness,

16 By me do chiefs rule, and nobles, All judges of the earth.

17 I love those loving me, And those seeking me earnestly do find me.

18 Wealth and honour [are] with me, Lasting substance and righteousness.

19 Better [is] my fruit than gold, even fine gold, And mine increase than choice silver.

20 In a path of righteousness I cause to walk, In midst of paths of judgment,

21 To cause my lovers to inherit substance, Yea, their treasures I fill.

22 Jehovah possessed me -- the beginning of His way, Before His works since then.

23 From the age I was anointed, from the first, From former states of the earth.

24 In there being no depths, I was brought forth, In there being no fountains heavy [with] waters,

25 Before mountains were sunk, Before heights, I was brought forth.

26 While He had not made the earth, and out-places, And the top of the dusts of the world.

27 In His preparing the heavens I [am] there, In His decreeing a circle on the face of the deep,

28 In His strengthening clouds above, In His making strong fountains of the deep,

29 In His setting for the sea its limit, And the waters transgress not His command, In His decreeing the foundations of earth,

30 Then I am near Him, a workman, And I am a delight -- day by day. Rejoicing before Him at all times,

31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth, And my delights [are] with the sons of men.

32 And now, ye sons, hearken to me, Yea, happy are they who keep my ways.

33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and slight not.

34 O the happiness of the man hearkening to me, To watch at my doors day by day, To watch at the door-posts of my entrance.

35 For whoso is finding me, hath found life, And bringeth out good-will from Jehovah.

36 And whoso is missing me, is wronging his soul, All hating me have loved death!

Proverbs 9:1-18

Wisdom has constructed her house, she has carved out her seven columns;

Wisdom has prepared her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has set her table.

She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out from the high points over the city:

“Let whoever is naïve come here; to any who lack sense I declare,

Come, take my nourishment, and drink of the wine I have mixed!

Forsake the foolishness you've been committing; progress in understanding.”

Whoever corrects the conceited reaps insults; and whoever reproves the wicked incurs condemnation

Do not reprimand the arrogant, they will hate you; reprove the wise, and they will appreciate you.

Instruct the wise, and they become even wiser; train the just, and they advance in learning.

The beginning of wisdom is regarding the Lord, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For by Me your days will be multiplied and the years of your life increased.

If you are wise, wisdom becomes an advantage; if arrogant, bear trials alone.

A foolish woman is shrill and doesn't know what she is talking about.

She sits at the door of her house upon her throne for everyone to observe.

Calling to passersby as they go on their way straight ahead:

“Let those who are naïve come on in, to those who lack sense I declare,

Stolen water tastes great, and bread taken secretly is pleasing!”

Unrealized is that even once giants were there, her former guests now in the pit of hell.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Wisdom hath builded her house, She hath hewn out her pillars -- seven.

2 She hath slaughtered her slaughter, She hath mingled her wine, Yea, she hath arranged her table.

3 She hath sent forth her damsels, She crieth on the tops of the high places of the city:

4 `Who [is] simple? let him turn aside hither.' Whoso lacketh heart: she hath said to him,

5 `Come, eat of my bread, And drink of the wine I have mingled.

6 Forsake ye, the simple, and live, And be happy in the way of understanding.

7 The instructor of a scorner Is receiving for it -- shame, And a reprover of the wicked -- his blemish.

8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee, Give reproof to the wise, and he loveth thee.

9 Give to the wise, and he is wiser still, Make known to the righteous, And he increaseth learning.

10 The commencement of wisdom [is] the fear of Jehovah, And a knowledge of the Holy Ones [is] understanding.

11 For by me do thy days multiply, And added to thee are years of life.

12 If thou hast been wise, thou hast been wise for thyself, And thou hast scorned -- thyself bearest [it].

13 A foolish woman [is] noisy, Simple, and hath not known what.

14 And she hath sat at the opening of her house, On a throne -- the high places of the city,

15 To call to those passing by the way, Who are going straight [on] their paths.

16 `Who [is] simple? let him turn aside hither.' And whoso lacketh heart -- she said to him,

17 `Stolen waters are sweet, And hidden bread is pleasant.'

18 And he hath not known that Rephaim [are] there, In deep places of Sheol her invited ones!

Proverbs 10:1-32 Proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son makes a dad happy, but a foolish son grieves mom.

Treasures of wickedness are worthless, but righteousness saves.

The Lord will not allow the soul of the righteous to starve; however, He disperses the want's of the immoral.

He becomes poor who deals with lazy hands, but the hand of the diligent generates wealth.

He who gathers in fine weather is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest brings disgrace.

Blessings rain down on the just, but violence overshadows what the wicked say.

The memory of the just is fond, but the name of the wicked are infamous.

The wise in heart will receive commandments, but a chatterbox will fail.

He who walks uprightly walks with confidence, but he who perverts his ways will be discovered.

He who winks with the eye causes hurt feelings, and a tedious fool kicks.

Out of the mouth of a righteous man comes a wealth of knowledge, but violence stifles the mouth of the wicked.

Hatred stirs up mischief, but love forgives sin.

On the lips of him who has understanding wisdom is discovered, but a whipping addresses the back of him who is void of comprehension.

Wise men remember knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish hangs himself.

The rich man’s wealth is his defense; the harm of the poor is their poverty.

The labor of the righteous promotes life, the fruit of the wicked is to engage in sin.

He who keeps instruction is headed for a good life. but he who refuses a reprimand is making a mistake.

He who hides hatred lies through his teeth, and he who spreads slander an idiot.

In the longwinded sin is not rare, but he who gets to the point is astute.

The tongue of the just is like select silver; the heart of the wicked is but a pittance

The lips of the righteous feed many others, but fools die for lacking wisdom.

The blessing of the Lord makes one rich without adding sorrow.

To do mischief is fun to a fool, but a man of understanding has wisdom.

What makes the wicked fear will eventually come about, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

As the dust devil passes, so the wicked will be gone, but the righteous has an eternal foundation.

As vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes, so is the lazybones to those who send him.

The regard of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked are shortened.

The hope of the righteous will be happiness, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.

The direction of the Lord is strength to the upright, but destruction will come to those promoting immorality.

The righteous will never be gone, but the wicked will not inherit the earth.

The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom, but the perverted tongue will be ripped out.

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked is perverted.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth a father to rejoice, And a foolish son [is] an affliction to his mother.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit not, And righteousness delivereth from death.

3 Jehovah causeth not the soul of the righteous to hunger, And the desire of the wicked He thrusteth away.

4 Poor [is] he who is working -- a slothful hand, And the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 Whoso is gathering in summer [is] a wise son, Whoso is sleeping in harvest [is] a son causing shame.

6 Blessings [are] for the head of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.

7 The remembrance of the righteous [is] for a blessing, And the name of the wicked doth rot.

8 The wise in heart accepteth commands, And a talkative fool kicketh.

9 Whoso is walking in integrity walketh confidently, And whoso is perverting his ways is known.

10 Whoso is winking the eye giveth grief, And a talkative fool kicketh.

11 A fountain of life [is] the mouth of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.

12 Hatred awaketh contentions, And over all transgressions love covereth.

13 In the lips of the intelligent is wisdom found, And a rod [is] for the back of him who is lacking understanding.

14 The wise lay up knowledge, and the mouth of a fool [is] near ruin.

15 The wealth of the rich [is] his strong city, The ruin of the poor [is] their poverty.

16 The wage of the righteous [is] for life, The increase of the wicked for sin.

17 A traveller to life [is] he who is keeping instruction, And whoso is forsaking rebuke is erring.

18 Whoso is covering hatred with lying lips, And whoso is bringing out an evil report is a fool.

19 In the abundance of words transgression ceaseth not, And whoso is restraining his lips [is] wise.

20 The tongue of the righteous [is] chosen silver, The heart of the wicked -- as a little thing.

21 The lips of the righteous delight many, And fools for lack of heart die.

22 The blessing of Jehovah -- it maketh rich, And He addeth no grief with it.

23 To execute inventions [is] as play to a fool, And wisdom to a man of understanding.

24 The feared thing of the wicked it meeteth him, And the desire of the righteous is given.

25 As the passing by of a hurricane, So the wicked is not, And the righteous is a foundation age-during.

26 As vinegar to the teeth, And as smoke to the eyes, So [is] the slothful to those sending him.

27 The fear of Jehovah addeth days, And the years of the wicked are shortened.

28 The hope of the righteous [is] joyful, And the expectation of the wicked perisheth.

29 The way of Jehovah [is] strength to the perfect, And ruin to workers of iniquity.

30 The righteous to the age is not moved, And the wicked inhabit not the earth.

31 The mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, And the tongue of frowardness is cut out.

32 The lips of the righteous know a pleasing thing, And the mouth of the wicked perverseness!

Um, no, the Bible doesn't mention credit cards.

And with that sentence the translation can be dismissed as fraudulent.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Not really. The point of the verse has nothing to do with what the husband took or didn't take. The point is that she is his wife ---- whether he is out of town and took his bag of gold or his credit cards. What I type is how I see the intent of the passage and that is what I'm sharing. I'm not trying to simply provide a verbatim translation. The entire point is that this father wants his son to stay away from enticement by presenting how such things occur.

People today don't run around with bags of gold ------ not likely even if they were to rob a bank. What the wife is implying that in taking a bundle of cash ---- hubby will be away for some time and the mice can play. But perhaps you're not looking at that...

Proverbs 11:1-31
God hates dishonesty. God loves honest practices.

The stuck-up will fall on their faces, but humble people use prudence.

The integrity of the honest keeps them on track; the deceit of cheaters brings them to ruin.

A tidy bank account is no help when life falls apart, but a principled life can withstand the worst.

Moral character makes for good decision making; an evil life brings an evil end.

Good character is the best insurance; crooks get trapped by their sinful pattern.

When the wicked die, there is no additional hope for that person. [Here is another Verse that contradicts Mormon policy]

A righteous person is saved from much trouble; a wicked runs straight for it.

The hypocrisy of the godless spoils their friends . The knowledge of the godly preserves them.

The righteousness to the godly bring blessing to their neighbors. At the destruction of evil there is celebrates.

When right-living people bless the city, it flourishes; evil talk turns it into a slum.

Mean-spirited slander of those around is heartless; quiet discretion accompanies good sense.

A chatterbox can’t be trusted with a secret, but someone of integrity will not violate a confidence.

Without direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel followed the better.

Anyone who makes deals with an evil stranger is sure to get burned; if you keep a cool head and poor bargains are avoided.

A gentle woman of grace gathers respect, but vulgar men of violence grab for loot.

When you’re kind to others, you help yourself; when you’re cruel to others, you hurt yourself.

Bad work receives a bad check; righteous is it's own reward.

Take your stand with God and live, or chase after evil and die.

God can’t stand cheaters, but oh how He appreciates integrity.

The wicked have been captured, and God’s people have escaped.

Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful face on a bubblehead.

The desires of good people lead straight what's best, but wicked ambition ends with frustration.

The world of the generous is enlarged; the world of the stingy gets shrinks.

These blessing others are abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.

Those that share find gain and those that hoard righteousness discover only loss.

The one who seeks good finds happiness; the student of evil inherits evil.

A life devoted to things is empty; a God-shaped life flourishes.

Exploit your family, and nothing is gained. The fool becomes a servant to the wise.

A good life is like a fruitful tree and a soul winner is wise.

If righteous people are reimbursed, what’s in store for the bad!

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Balances of deceit [are] an abomination to Jehovah, And a perfect weight [is] His delight.

2 Pride hath come, and shame cometh, And with the lowly [is] wisdom.

3 The integrity of the upright leadeth them, And the perverseness of the treacherous destroyeth them.

4 Wealth profiteth not in a day of wrath, And righteousness delivereth from death.

5 The righteousness of the perfect maketh right his way, And by his wickedness doth the wicked fall.

6 The righteousness of the upright delivereth them, And in mischief the treacherous are captured.

7 In the death of a wicked man, hope perisheth, And the expectation of the iniquitous hath been lost.

8 The righteous from distress is drawn out, And the wicked goeth in instead of him.

9 With the mouth a hypocrite corrupteth his friend, And by knowledge the righteous are drawn out.

10 In the good of the righteous a city exulteth, And in the destruction of the wicked [is] singing.

11 By the blessing of the upright is a city exalted, And by the mouth of the wicked thrown down.

12 Whoso is despising his neighbour lacketh heart, And a man of understanding keepeth silence.

13 A busybody is revealing secret counsel, And the faithful of spirit is covering the matter.

14 Without counsels do a people fall, And deliverance [is] in a multitude of counsellors.

15 Evil [one] suffereth when he hath been surety [for] a stranger, And whoso is hating suretyship is confident.

16 A gracious woman retaineth honour, And terrible [men] retain riches.

17 A kind man is rewarding his own soul, And the fierce is troubling his own flesh.

18 The wicked is getting a lying wage, And whoso is sowing righteousness -- a true reward.

19 Rightly [is] righteousness for life, And whoso is pursuing evil -- for his own death.

20 An abomination to Jehovah [are] the perverse of heart, And the perfect of the way [are] His delight.

21 Hand to hand, the wicked is not acquitted, And the seed of the righteous hath escaped.

22 A ring of gold in the nose of a sow -- A fair woman and stubborn of behaviour.

23 The desire of the righteous [is] only good, The hope of the wicked [is] transgression.

24 There is who is scattering, and yet is increased, And who is keeping back from uprightness, only to want.

25 A liberal soul is made fat, And whoso is watering, he also is watered.

26 Whoso is withholding corn, the people execrate him, And a blessing [is] for the head of him who is selling.

27 Whoso is earnestly seeking good Seeketh a pleasing thing, And whoso is seeking evil -- it meeteth him.

28 Whoso is confident in his wealth he falleth, And as a leaf, the righteous flourish.

29 Whoso is troubling his own house inheriteth wind, And a servant [is] the fool to the wise of heart.

30 The fruit of the righteous [is] a tree of life, And whoso is taking souls [is] wise.

31 Lo, the righteous in the earth is recompensed, Surely also the wicked and the sinner!
