Exodus 15:1-27 Then Moses and the people of Israel sing this song to the Lord: (New Living Translation for the songs)

“I will sing to the Lord,
for he has triumphed gloriously;
he has hurled both horse and rider

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the sea, the Lord brought the water crashing down on them. But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground!

Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine, leading all the women in playing on their tambourines and dancing. Miriam sing this song:

“Sing to the Lord,
for he has triumphed gloriously;
he has hurled both horse and rider
into the sea.”

Then Moses leads the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, moving out into the desert of Shur. They travel in this desert for three days without finding water. Arriving at the oasis of Marah, they find the water too bitter to drink. So they named the place Marah (which means “bitter”). The people complain turning against Moses. They are thirsty and demand water. Moses cries out to the Lord for help, and the Lord shows him a piece of wood. Moses throws it into the water, and this makes the water drinkable. It was here at Marah that the Lord sets before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him. God says that if they listen carefully to the voice of the Lord God and do what is right in his sight by obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then God will not make you suffer any of the diseases as God sent upon the Egyptians; for the Lord who heals. After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.

1 Then singeth Moses and the sons of Israel this song to Jehovah, and they speak, saying: -- `I sing to Jehovah, For triumphing He hath triumphed; The horse and its rider He hath thrown into the sea.

2 My strength and song is Jah, And He is become my salvation: This [is] my God, and I glorify Him; God of my father, and I exalt Him.

Do the Hebrews ever really get it? I mean they make the same mistakes over and over. They get mad a Moses --- do they pray to God? They are brought out of Egypt and yet they fail to understand or believe the reality. If anyone is a sadist, it's the nation of Israel.

Exodus 16:1-36 Okay, so the whole community of Israel sets out from Elim and journey to the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Mount Sinai. They get there on the fifteenth day of the second month, one month after leaving Egypt. The entire community of Israel complains about Moses and Aaron. They murmer wishing they were dead. They speak about how good they had it in Egypt where they had all the meat & bread they could eat. Now they are starving to death in the wilderness. The Lord tells Moses that He is going to rain down food from heaven for them. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. God will test them to see whether or not they will follow God's instructions. On the sixth day they will gather food, and when they prepare it, there will be twice as much as usual. So Moses and Aaron tells all the people of Israel, that by evening they will realize it is the Lord who brought them out of Egypt. In the morning they will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard the complaints, which are against him. Mose and Aaron have done nothing that the Hebrews should complain. Moses added that the Lord will provide meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning, having heard all their complaints against Him. Moses tells Aaron, to tell the entire community of Israel to present themselves before the Lord, for he hears their complaining. As Aaron speaks to the whole community of Israel, they look out toward the wilderness. There they can see the awesome glory of the Lord in the cloud. The Lord tells Moses, to tell the Hebrews in the evening they will have meat to eat, and in the morning they will have all the bread they want. They will know that He is the Lord their God. That evening vast numbers of quail flew in and covered the camp. The next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew. When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost covered the ground. The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. “What is it? (or Manna)” they asked each other. They have no idea what it is. Moses tells them, that it is the food the Lord has provided. These are the Lord’s instructions: Each household should gather as much as it needs -- picking up two quarts for each person in each tent. The people of Israel do as they are told. Some gather a lot, some only a little. But when they measure it out, everyone has just enough. Those who gather a lot have nothing left over, and those who gather only a little have enough. Each family has just what it needs. Moses tells them not to keep any of it until morning. But some of them don't listen and keep some of it until morning. By then it is full of maggots and has a terrible smell. Moses is very angry with them. After this the people gather the food morning by morning, each family according to its needs. And as the sun became hot, the flakes they did not pick up melt and disappear. On day 6, they gather twice as much as usual—four quarts for each person instead of two. Then all the leaders of the community come to Moses for an explanation. He tells them that the Lord says tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. They are to bake or boil as much as they want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow. So they put some aside until morning, just as Moses had commanded. And in the morning the leftover food is wholesome and good, without maggots or odor. Moses tells them to eat this food today, for today is a Sabbath day dedicated to the Lord. There will be no food on the ground today. They may gather the food for six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath. There will be no food on the ground that day. Some of the people go out anyway on the seventh day, but found no food. The Lord asked Moses, for how long will these people refuse to obey His commands and instructions? They should realize that the Sabbath is the Lord’s gift to them. That is why he gives them a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there will be enough for two days. On the Sabbath day they must each remain where they are. They are not to go out to pick up food on the seventh day. So the people did not gather any food on the seventh day. The Israelites call the food manna. It is white like coriander seed, and it tastes like honey wafers. Moses says, that the Lord has commanded them to fill a two-quart container with manna to preserve it for their descendants. Later generations will be able to see the food provided in the wilderness when God set them free from Egypt. Moses has Aaron get a jar and fill it with two quarts of manna. Then Aaro is to put it in a sacred place before the Lord to preserve it for all future generations. Aaron does just as the Lord commands Moses. Eventually it will be placed it in the Ark of the Covenant—in front of the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. So the people of Israel eat manna for forty years until they arrive at the land where they are to settle. They eat manna until they come to the border of the land of Canaan. The container used to measure the manna is an omer, which is one-tenth of an ephah; it held about two quarts.

27 And it cometh to pass on the seventh day, some of the people have gone out to gather, and have not found.

28 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `How long have ye refused to keep My commands, and My laws?

29 see, because Jehovah hath given to you the sabbath, therefore He is giving to you on the sixth day bread of two days; abide ye each [in] his place, no one doth go out from his place on the seventh day.'

30 And the people rest on the seventh day,

31 and the house of Israel call its name Manna, and it [is] as coriander seed, white; and its taste [is] as a cake with honey.

32 And Moses saith, `This [is] the thing which Jehovah hath commanded: Fill the omer with it, for a charge for your generations, so that they see the bread which I have caused you to eat in the wilderness, in My bringing you out from the land of Egypt.'

33 And Moses saith unto Aaron, `Take one pot, and put there the fulness of the omer of manna, and let it rest before Jehovah, for a charge for your generations;'

34 as Jehovah hath given commandment unto Moses, so doth Aaron let it rest before the Testimony, for a charge.

35 And the sons of Israel have eaten the manna forty years, until their coming in unto the land to be inhabited; the manna they have eaten till their coming in unto the extremity of the land of Canaan.

36 and the omer is a tenth of the ephah.
