Kevin, I think you have missed my point. There is no doubt that my wife would have been in even more desperate straits without government help. However, the government also put its foot upon her neck everytime she tried to help herself. First of all, there was no effort by the government to enforce child support payments by her ex-husband. He was finally dragged into court after Linda and I were married to collect all of the back support he owed. He is still paying that back support, to the state. She was denied any government educational grant money, even though she qualified academically, and certainly she was not making too much money for a financial disqualification.

Shutting down all government programs is not a realistic option. There is not enough time and space to detail just what should be done. I don't have all of the answers, but it would be a good idea to canvas the different states to see which programs do work and which ones do not. I think California's educational system would be one place to check for ways to improve. Unless things have changed there, any California resident can obtain a good college education if he/she so desires.
