Shades!!!! :(

Why do you have the smiles turned off?

That's a real bummer.

Does it take up too much bandwidth?

It doesn't take up much bandwidth at all, certainly not enough to make a difference.

The reason they're turned off is 1) because it makes a forum look childish, 2) because people tend to overuse them to the point of clutter, and 3) because the general quality of posts noticeably increases if people use the English language to get their points across rather than absurd smilie-face graphics.

I respect your philosophy....However....my two cents?

I think the smileys help designate tone. Sometimes it's very hard to read people in an Internet post.

If you use the "wink" smiley, etc. it makes it a little easier to gage if someone is joking, etc.

Since we can't read body language in a post, the emoticons help bridge that gap at times.

1) Hey, but we are childish. 2) True, sometimes. 3) Aw, but they can be an ice breaker or peace maker at times.

Here are some useful ways to get your 'emotions' across:

:) Smile ;) Wink :( Frown :)~ Sticking out tounge 8o Suprised

Or you can use these:

bla bla bla I just love Hitler! /sarcasam
bla bla bla can't we all just get along? *sigh*
bla bla bla you are being a really stupid jerk! [ANGRY]

You just have to be a little creative. They work just as well as emoticons without looking childish and are less likely to be overused.

But some of the emoticons available are so cool! It's like a kid in a candy store being denied. ;)

Yes, thankyou very much Doc! I like smileys when used in moderation, but I think your right that there is too much of a temptation to overuse them. Thanks for saving us from ourselves.
