A Lamanite no more?

Post by _Dakotah »

With the flap about the one word change in the intro to the Book of Mormon am I now a nothing? As one who was DNA tested and am now descended from Mongol types, NOT from Hebrews(contrary to the Patriarchal blessing lineage declaration), what am I?
Indian placement program I was a Lamanite.
When the missionaries came by, I was a Lamanite.
When Spencer Kimball came to the area, I was a Lamanite.
When I served a Lamanite mission in Montana, I was a Lamanite.
When they needed Sacrament speakers and someone to show faith, I was a Lamanite.
For 170+ years, from Joseph until Gordon Hinckley, I was a Lamanite.(well, maybe not Gordon as he isn't sure of much these days, it seems)

Now after DNA testing and a wording change in the introduction to the Book of Mormon...

Who in the heck am I?

Perhaps you should ask the Church?

Hi Dakotah,

Who in the heck am I?

You are part of the human family like all of us.

You have a rich heritage that may not be what you were told by church leaders, but if you are a Native American you most definitely have an amazing story to discover.

Think of this new "revelation" as a blessing... you can now discover your true history, maybe hear the stories of your REAL ancestors, and find new meaning in your life as you discover who you really are!

Easy for me to write but coming to terms with these sorts of doctrinal/belief/teaching changes seems akin to an adult finding out they were adopted at birth. It takes some time to adjust.

My heart goes out to you,

I was wondering about a Lamanite by any other name....

Now that the policy has changed, do you think they could make provision for those who wish to be forally adopted into the Tribe of Laman?

Call yourself whatever you like. If you want to call yourself a Lamanite do so.

We know very little about Native Americans, where they came from, how many groups came, if they all are from one family source, or many. The Book of Mormon never really says whether or not there was people already here when Lehi's family came.
Dakotah When you say that you were always have been called a Lamanite, the reasons that I stated above are why. It was, and is, natural that you talk about some of the race, you think that all of the race would be included. That is just human nature.

I've found that Natives have their own creation stories. They make as much sense as Adam and Eve.
