After Babylonians sacked Jerusalem, many Jews fled to Egypt until the Persians sacked Babylon and sent the Jews back to Jerusalem. It seems that it would have been better for Lehi to take his family south and die in Egypt like Jeremiah reportedly did and then Nephi (as an old man) could have returned and help rebuild the temple.

Of course, the Book of Mormon Lehi is a fictional character, but if you accept him and his story as real, you might counter that what God ordained is not for us to question.

Why didn't Lehi sail on the Mediterranean Sea?

His lame-o ship would have been scuttled by Etruscan pirates.
