My main reason for joining this site was because, as my name implies, I love music and play a range of instruments. I believe that music was truly God given. I love D & C 136 v28 "If thou art merry, praise teh Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.

What does concern me is that in LDS worship only one type of instrument prevails, the keyboard. So much beautiful music can be produced by other instruments, yet very rarely do we get the opportunity to play those other instruments in Church. I wanted to find out in a free discussion forum what other people, members, former members and non members, thought about the dominance of teh organ.

Although it is more risky in terms of content, I would suggest you repost this in the Terrestrial Kingdom where people are more likely to respond. I played saxophone in highschool, but I was really taken with electronic instruments, and I still play around with synthesizers. I was sort of bummed that one could not sing in Latin in church because of the whole Catholic thing. I love Latin, and there is some stunning music for which the text is in Latin only.

It's been my experience that, outside of Sacrament Meeting, the piano far out-dominates the organ.

It's not that it belongs there because of the content; the simple fact is that the Terrestrial gets more traffic.

I think this is one area that LDS Inc. could really improve. Just the Piano and organ gets real old after a while.

We had one new member from Hawaii that talked in sacrament meeting and wanted to sing a little song a play his guitar but they told him he couldn't because it was against policy. :(

I guess Moroni would be banned also.



I go to a little Bible Church now where the music is a lot more lively. It is not a Rock Concert but they use Drums, Guitars, Keyboards, etc. - The music has a lot more feeling and people really get into it. I went to a baby blessing a few months ago back at the LDS Church and the songs sounded like I was at a funeral.

I did though go to the Osmond/Pioneer Mormon Tabernacle Choir last week and it was fun seeing the MoTab get a little more lively. It was great seeing them sing "As I went down to the river to pray" and a few other songs. They need to do more stuff like this during conference.
