LDS Leaders as Business Leaders

I have an insurance policy with Beneficial Life which is own by the Church. On Tuesday it was announced that the Church wants to get out of the insurance business and that Ben. Life will be adding no more polices, reducing size and eventually shutting down...???
So one of my financial guys emails me last night and said: President Monson (Head of the Board of Directors) simply made a decision that they no longer want to grow the company.
This got me to thinking about the Brethren as Board members for companies owned by the Church. What do we know about their roles? How involved are they in decisions made? Did President Monson really make that decision and does he know enough about the insurance business to make it? Do GAs on boards actively add expertise to the companies or are the positions more symbolic? Do these men receive payment for being on Boards of Directors and if so how much is that?
There's a good chance that none of this information is available as the Church is pretty tight lipped about money but it's worth a try to ask.
