Thanks, MCB. I've found it before, though. It's useful to see all forms of polemicism.

I am just starting this one:
http://books.google.com/books?id=0ngFAA ... &q&f=falseIt is starting out, at least, fairly well-balanced. I started reading several other women's stories, and they had a sensationalized fictiony flavor.

What is this? The Church liquor store in ZCMI did not have to pay any business fees, but gentile establishments had to pay $100 a month? Ah, those protectionist tariffs!

The Mormon Battalion was amply paid by the US government, but BY pocketed most of the money for their effort to pave a path to California. A few were at Sutter's Mill when gold was discovered, however.

Now I am starting "The Rocky Mountain Saints" by To be honest Stenhouse. Promises to be good-- all 805 pages. Starts out with an obvious mockery of anti-Mormon propaganda.

I just read the Wikipedia article on Ann-Eliza. It appears that later the Brighamites revenged on her. Not nice.
Thinking back on what she wrote, she must have been identified early on as dangerously too intelligent and strong-willed.

After tossing a few that are propaganda on either side, I have just started on BK Roberts' Mormon Doctrine of Deity Should be fun. Contrasts the Catholic God with the Mormon God(s). Very interesting in that Roberts argues for some characteristics of the Mormon god that modern-day apologists deny. Finishes off with propaganda, and does not allow Fr. VanDerDonckt a rebuttal to Robert's response. I really didn't read all of it. Others who get into deep theological issues might find it interesting.

Now going on to The History of the Saints; or, an Expose of Joe Smith, by John Bennett.
It is full of documentation, letters and newspaper articles. So far, very interesting, lots of comments about Nancy Rigdon's difficulties.
