Geneaological question? CRITICAL

I just asked a question over on PreMormon. Anybody who has access to genealogical records for Sol Spalding and another important person, also surnamed Spalding, I am eager for information.

Are you asking if there is a connection between the two men? It seems they are distant cousins through a common Ancestor Thomas Spalding and Katherine Hall.

As to a Catholic connection, the Spalding family came to St. Mary's County, Maryland. This page explains that ". . . a large number of its early settlers were Catholics, seeking the freedom to worship under the religion of their choice." So it should be a good place to start with your theory!

I just finished reading the relevant parts of Gregg's History of Hancock County. Big question. Given the presence of material that resembles Maccabees in the Book of Mormon, and the importance, according to my time-line, of Jesus coming to N. America, I concluded that Sol was latently Catholic. Gregg talked with the pastor of the Catholic Church in Warsaw, and the history of the Catholic Church in Hancock County, and Mormon persecutions against them. (I just also read Mike Reed's information and listened to the podcast) This theory of mine has a bit more substance now.

Could you check up on your genealogical database, and see if there is a connection? Or, at the least, whether Sol had Catholic cultural heritage?

However, I have abandoned this line of inquiry. My most basic question is what in Solomon Spalding's cultural heritage led him to write what he wrote. I found something else--- no genealogical records available for his mother Prescilla Paine. <giggles> Which means picking up on a very old theory I had abandoned.

Right away I was able to find some stuff on Ancestry for a Prescilla Paine. You'll have to tell me if it is her or not.

Prescilla Paine born to Solomon and Prescilla in Canterbury, Connecticut on 20 Aug 1734
I see the marriage record for her and a Josiah Spaulding in Plainfield, CT on 24 Dec 1745

Is this the right family?
