A new column of mine appeared in the “Mormon Times” section of the Deseret News today, entitled by the newspaper’s editors “Prophet’s Birthday Fits with Season”:

Daniel,

Over in the evil Terrestrial forum someone wanted to know, not how many scholars were LDS, but how many scholars became LDS as converts?

While I am sure most of the people on your website are probably BIC scholars, do you have any information on which are converts?

I haven't done the math recently, but every time I've checked in the past, I've been a bit surprised to discover that the proportion of converts on the site was remaining constant at about 22%. That's absolutely not the result of any effort or intention on my part.

Some converted in their youth, some later. My first "volunteer" converted, as I recall, in his early sixties.

I've just added a third relevant "Mormon Scholars Testify" link, to the testimony of Gordon A. Madsen, in the opening post, above:

I think Dr. Peterson should have his own regular column in the Deseret News. He could pick and choose his subject matter much like Robert Kirby does for the Salt Lake Tribune. Especially interesting would be his thoughts on subject matter he has gleaned from participation on message boards.

I have one.

I've been writing a column every other week since February 2010.

It goes to weekly after the first of the year.

There might be a little bit of that. Probably not much, though.

How will you find the time?*

*This question is a serious one; I'm not being sarcastic.

That's a serious concern of mine. It's why, for this past year, I only agreed to do a column every other week. Now, though, I'm cautiously moving things up. We'll see how it goes.

The most serious problem is that I travel a lot. Often for weeks at a time. (I'm whispering because, plainly, my doing so absolutely infuriates a few people here.) I'm curious to see how well I'll actually be able to create a stockpile of columns-written-in-advance to meet such situations.
