LDS Interpretation of Jesus' Lightning

Post by _moksha »

I am curious about the LDS interpretation of this scripture:

Luke 17:20-24 (New Century Version)

God's Kingdom Is Within You

20 Some of the Pharisees asked Jesus, "When will the kingdom of God come?"

Jesus answered, "God's kingdom is coming, but not in a way that you will be able to see with your eyes. 21 People will not say, 'Look, here it is!' or, 'There it is!' because God's kingdom is within[a] you."
22 Then Jesus said to his followers, "The time will come when you will want very much to see one of the days of the Son of Man. But you will not see it. 23 People will say to you, 'Look, there he is!' or, 'Look, here he is!' Stay where you are; don't go away and search.

When Jesus Comes Again

24 "When the Son of Man comes again, he will shine like lightning, which flashes across the sky and lights it up from one side to the other.

Could this lightning be an epiphany, a rapture, an asteroid or is there an altogether separate LDS interpretation?

Well in the KJV, it is:
20¶And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

21Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

22And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.

23And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.

24For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

It kinda reminds me of this verse I was reading today in the Book of Mormon =).
3 Nephi 19:25
And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus; and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed all the whiteness, yea, even there could be nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness thereof.

Doing some searching on the 'white countenance' stuff, I also found this, which really explains it well, I think.
Matthew 28:3
His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

Hope I helped =).

The LDS understanding is that the Second Coming of Jesus (the BIG ONE, not the preparatory ones) will involve everyone simultaneously knowing it is happening. The warning is that you won't miss it by not paying attention. It won't slip by you. Everyone, living and dead, will know it's happening and even what it is. If anyone tells you Jesus has come again and is living in a cave in Qumran or Tibet or whatever you can safely say they are lying.

As lightning strikes and lightens or is seen by everyone so shall be the coming of the Messiah.
