Textual History of the English Book of Abraham

Post by _Daniel Peterson »

I'm delighted to announce -- and to shamelessly steal David Bokovoy's note to this effect from over on the Better Board -- that Professor Brian Hauglid's long-awaited A Textual History of the Book of Abraham: Manuscripts and Editions is now available. (Strictly speaking, it's a textual history of the English text, not of the ancient original.) It should be on the shelves very soon. As other volumes in the Book of Abraham series published by the Maxwell Institute have been, the book will also be distributed through the University of Chicago Press.

Here is a brief abstract:

A Textual History of the Book of Abraham: Manuscripts and Editions serves as a source book for interested researchers and scholars. It includes a brief introduction to the Book of Abraham and a detailed record of textual variants from the time it first appeared in the Times and Seasons until its latest edition (1981). This volume also produces, for the first time, typographic transcriptions with facing gray scale images of the surviving handwritten manuscripts of the Book of Abraham. Several appendices offer additional helpful resources such as contemporary accounts related to the translation of the Book of Abraham and a full set of color high-resolution images of the surviving Abraham manuscripts.

The book simply contains raw data and is not apologetic in design or intent. This volume focuses solely on the Abraham manuscripts. Dr. Hauglid is currently working on providing transcripts for all the Egyptian manuscripts as well.

Here is the table of contents:

I am a little disappointed that his book only contains images of the manuscripts and not the rest of the KEP. Oh well. It will be nice to have high res images of the manuscripts.

this is very off topic but did you know the one who spams some of you with anti Mormon material esp. about the blacks and goes by the name of SECRET is actually our laborious fellow member here named Darrick Evenson?

I recently came on as a member and found his prattlings everywhere here.

Any chance of getting the Facsimilies on some Ute Red XXL T-shirts hand autographed by Dr. Hauglid?

I can't imagine this exhausted work complete without the mention of the scholarly Joseph Smith Alphabet. Is it included on any of these 300+ pages? It just seems to put the entire subject into perfect perspective to give it the credibility it deserves.
