Only-in-Provo Department
I'll be speaking in a couple of weeks down in Maricopa, Arizona, on the topic of "The Revelations of Joseph Smith: Evidence and Witnesses." For any who might be interested, here are the relevant details, as supplied to me by the organizer:
Saturday, February 26, 2011
7:00 P.M.
Maricopa Stake Center
(37280 W. Bowlin Rd. Maricopa, Arizona 85138)
From Phoenix: head east on I-10 towards Tucson and exit at Queen Creek Road [Exit 164]. Turn right and continue to Maricopa [Queen Creek Road becomes AZ-347]. Turn left on Honeycutt Avenue [before the train tracks] and drive ca. five miles to Hartman Road [the street sign can be difficult to see; if you come to a roundabout and an elementary school, you just missed it]. Turn right on Hartman and take your first right [Bowlin Road]. The stake center is on the right.
From Tucson: head north on I-10, and then exit onto I-8 towards San Diego. Exit on Stanfield Road [Exit 161] and turn right. Turn left on AZ-84 and drive ca. five miles to AZ-347. Turn right and drive to Maricopa. Turn right on Honeycutt Avenue [after the train tracks] and drive ca. five miles to Hartman Road [the street sign can be difficult to see; if you come to a roundabout and an elementary school, you just missed it]. Turn right on Hartman and take your first right [Bowlin Road]. The stake center is on the right.
I have a few other speaking engagements on the calendar, too, and will put those up as time permits.
If nothing else, curious onlookers may simply want to see what "one of the most evil and degenerate people that the Church has ever produced" is actually like, in person.

LOL! Thanks, Dan!
Any plans for speaking in NC?
If you find yourself near the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point), let me know.

Dr. Peterson,
Would you mind providing bullet points of your presentation following the fireside?

Re: Only-in-Provo Department
Will you be covering Zelph, the great white lamanite warrior and Joseph putting his staff to the ground during Zions camp and revealing that spot as the location of the Nephite city of Manti, the southernmost city of the nephite civilization?
Prophetic statements per those who were with Joseph at the time.

Re: Only-in-Provo Department
I probably won't post any bullet-point summary of the speech. My notes are sparse to the point of incomprehensible to anybody but me, and, if I ever get around to fleshing them out -- which I plan to do, actually -- it will be for publication. But that's a bit off in the distance right now.
I haven't spoken there in quite a few years, and, sadly, have no plans to speak there in the foreseeable future. That's too bad, because I like the area and have several things that I still want to see there.
Will do.

Too bad. My studio is hosting a music festival the first two weekends in April.
When you do get out this way, if I know enough ahead, I can plan one of our Master Classes to coincide with your visit.

Alas, I'm traveling elsewhere early in April. (Among other things, one of my nephews is getting married in California.)

That would be fun.

Re: Only-in-Provo Department
This will actually be in Provo, so perhaps I shouldn't mention it. But it includes a lot of people from outside of Provo, so I think I will.
On 6 April, the Wheatley Institution at BYU will be hosting a conference on "Islam and the West."
The general topic will be how Islam and the West can get along and get along better. We’ll have a panel of Muslims talking about the interface issues from the perspective of Islam and a panel of Westerners talking about the same issues from the perspective of the West (not only what has been and is, but what might and should be). Dr. Donna Lee Bowen and I, of BYU, and Gen. (Ret.) Buford Blount (first tank commander into Baghdad) will be the panel for the West. Dr. Frederick Axelgard, a vice president of General Dynamics Corporation with a Ph.D. and a great deal of experience on Middle Eastern politics, will be the panel chair. The Islamic scholars are Khosrow Semanani (a very successful and wealthy Iranian-American physicist/businessman based in Salt Lake City), Dr. Ingrid Mattson (Director of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations and Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Theological Seminary), and Dr. Sulayman Nyang (professor and chair of African Studies at Howard University in Washington DC), with Dr. Douglas Johnston (of the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy in Washington DC) as panel chair. Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl (of the UCLA law school, and a personal hero of mine) will give the closing lecture (Distinguished Lecture in International Affairs) that evening after dinner.

Re: Only-in-Provo Department
A little off topic, but I wish there were more of these sorts of things on the east coast (or just any at all). Teryl Givens speaks from time to time, and I've had the pleasant opportunity of spending some time discussing things with him at his house, but it'd be nice to have more formal events on the right coast.

Re: Only-in-Provo Department
For whatever it may be worth, we're tentatively planning to hold the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology on the campus of Eastern University, near Philadelphia.
My only real reservation is that our contact there is pushing for May, which is bad for me, personally.
