If only we had the faith
If only we had the faith
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We the First Presidency and counsel of the twelve apostles have been aware of the concerns of our brethren of the African race. Specifically, we are aware that there have been teachings from past Church leadership that have been offensive. Many questions have been raised concerning the so called "curse of Cain" doctrine and Priesthood ban. We declare in words of soberness that these teachings were not of God but of Man. We officially separate ourselves from any teachings associated with racism and most vehemently disassociate ourselves from the "curse of Cain doctrine". We realize that some of our very finest leaders took part in these false teachings. Only God can judge their actions. As for us, let us flee from speculation and falsehoods. Let us seek to embrace our differences in the unity of the faith. Let us look to the standard works for guidance and direction. If there are any who have wavered in their faith in the Lord's church, we invite you to come back. Your faithful brethren in Christ,
The First Presidency

If we can't count on prophets to be right, then what can we count on? How can we count on the standard works when they were written by prophets?
I'm the apostate your bishop warned you about.

I think you can by virtue of D&C 107 wherein we see that the FP and Qo12 are equal in authority and thus all must agree. What is the sign of this agreement today? Official publication.

But then, LDS prophets and apostles are proven to be fallable and unable to distinguish eternal truths as claimed the 'restoration'to have restored, and to have a prophetic "mouthpiece" that speaks to the world on God's behalf that doesn't really seem to speak for God, or know up from down.
If the LDS church was wrong concerning the potential eternal consequences of hundreds of millions, if not billions of Negros, then what else are they fundamentally wrong about?
More than two earrings counseled against? Believers would spit out their coffee (why is coffee wrong - when LDS leaders are so prone to major doctrinal error) in roarous laughter. Hey LDS leaders -- focus on getting the big stuff right before you worry about my hot drinks or how many earrings I am wearing.

When was this statement issued?
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

I think it is a hypothetical. The church leadership would never admit that a central tenet or teaching was speculation, falsehood or man made.

It was not a central tenet. It was a comedy of errors that started on the say of one man, who was not a Church official, at a time during Winter Quarters when it was worried that a particular black elder might horn in on the polygamy action. The comedy of errors continued for 134 year, during which much speculation was added to the original error.

"central tenet" was the wrong phrase. The better phrase is that central tenets of the gospel...of the so called 'restoration', were denied a group of people based on bigotry of men, and nothing more than one's race and color of skin.
For everything that church claimed to be: God directed, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man -- was denied to a certain group of people.
Indeed it was a "comedy of errors" and for all that the church claims its prophets are lead and directed by God, was flatly contradicted by 150 years of institutional bigotry.

Hey, everybody makes mistakes. Even whoppers like this. However, that does not mean that inspiration does not shine through. While failing to admit a mistake may be a continung failure in the repentance process, a man or a church can still continue seeking to do God's will.
