If I understand Bcspace right, he says doctrine is only what is contained within the LDS Canon.

It seems the Church is always being slammed for utterances made by LDS Apostles and Prophets. The usual answer is that they were speaking as Men and Man always has a great capacity for error. That is why sticking with the LDS Canon is so important. That way we will never bog down in speculation such as Adam being God or think that such trivia as earrings and white shirts should be a concern of the Church.

If we give credence to every item ever said, are we not just putting men on pedestals and waiting for them to be toppled when what they said is faulty? By limiting doctrine to what has made its way into Canon we are limiting the over reach of speculation.

I've never said that. LDS doctrine is that which is published by the LDS Church and so besides the scriptures (canon), it includes all manuals etc.

According to the Church, the First Presidency and Qo12 counsel together on what doctrine gets published, so yes, any indivudal GA statements, books, etc. are not LDS doctrine, unless the Church publishes them and that avoids much personal speculation.

Are there still errors, conflicts, or anachronisms? Of course. Nothing catastrophic though.

So the teaching that The Lord will never allow the prophet to lead the church astray... is wrong?

If you can't trust the teachings and leadership of Gods Chosen on Earth... what good are they?

Rather than gloating that someone may thing you have a valid point regarding doctrine you have to point up that once again doctrine is what it is not, and is not what you think it is.

It has been. But it's esoteric. The Temple Recommend interview book [sic] is another example of such.
