Truman Madsen on MST

Post by _Daniel Peterson »

I'm particularly happy to have posted a testimony from Truman Madsen on "Mormon Scholars Testify" this morning.

He was a pivotal influence in my coming to BYU from California as an undergraduate, and in my realizing that there was intellectual depth to Mormonism.

Honestly, that was refreshing for me. I don't mean to just blatantly put down the posters here, but it was far more moving for me than anything I've read here. That for me, hopefully explains myself to others here so no feelings are hurt.
Love ya tons,

You're right.

The atmosphere here is pretty bad, but one gets used to it and forgets how much nicer things are outside.

Hey Dr. Peterson...

GREAT addition. I've always loved Madsen.

One typo you might want to be aware of, at the end in the biography section:

Insofar as the aim of the Book of Mormon is to "convince the Jew and the Gentile that Jesus is the Christ," and insofar as Grant Palmer and Michael Quinn continue to profess a strong belief in Christ, their testimonies should be included in Mormon Scholars Testify, too.

But don't stop there--let me tell you about Cassie, my trans-gendered father-in-law whom I deeply respect and admire. Cassie earned a medical degree from Harvard, attained a pre-retirement rank of full colonel in the Air Force, and served as an LDS bishop on at least one occasion that I know of. She is no longer welcome in the Mormon church because of her recently-revealed trans-gendered status but she still professes a deep and moving testimony of Christ.

Would you like a copy of Cassie's testimony for Mormon Scholars Testify?

Wait, isn't Truman the guy who defended polygamy?

Oh yeah, here he is:

What "scholar" in their right mind would want to be identified as a member of a group represented by the individual who made this video?

This is not scholarship. It is nothing but superstition, pure and simple. In fact, its is "make it up as you go along" superstition, often the most dangerous kind.

DCP wonders why folks on this board seem to have so much animosity towards him at times. Perhaps it is because he comes here and tries to represent this kind of nonsense as a product of scholarship, and is then offended when rational people call it for what it is.

I wonder if Daniel agrees with Truman in the above linked video?

Seriously, is that what started Mormon polygamy? Hyrum asking Joseph about his dead wife??

The website is obviously for LDS members who in their field are considered scholars (at one level or another). It is site to bear one's testimony, which unfortunately, often falls into touch-feely gooyness that has nothing to do with anything but how the individual feels. Throw in some bald assertions. This of course is not scholarship, it is trained Mormon testifying.

It doesn't do anything for me, more like, I kept wondering when the guy was going to get to his point. (Still don't know the point.) The LDS who have replied in this thread seem to love it, and so it is a hit with the intended audience.
