Prophesy, or lack thereof...

It seems to me that current Church leaders are only prepared to prophecy things that the world already knows. And are shifting things that were prophesied to something else. An example.

We are in the last days...

But now Packer says

Last days not even close...

What has been announced, stated or hinted at during Conference that can be classed as a new Prophecy or Revelation?

What has been discussed that is different or of a higher level than we hear week in week out during Sunday School?

We're told that we don't need new prophesy, because we already have plenty that we aren't living.

Or something.

The lexical (Bible) definition of prophesy is merely the preaching of the gospel. While it may include predicted future events, such is not necessary for prophesy.

That may be true, but the LDS prophet is sustained as "prophet, seer and revelator." I think at least that seer fits the function described in the OP.

This is true ONLY when you know by the spirit of prophecy that what you are preaching is true.
Not all preaching counts. Like I could testify that the love of God is shed abroad in the next world like a bright and warm sun filling all things. That would be a truth I know by the spirit and power of revelation that I can prophecy as being true. So you still cannot preach and have it count for prophecy without a revelation in there somewhere. A better than rote testimony would be required.

Sure. But there are no requirements on the number and the when of new and unique revelations.

This is true ONLY when you know by the spirit of prophecy that what you are preaching is true.

Then it counts by your own definition.

So you still cannot preach and have it count for prophecy without a revelation in there somewhere. A better than rote testimony would be required.

Most of the Bible is rote testimony by this logic. The coming of the Messiah and so forth.

I think we are told we will have a Prophet. That we have. I suspect that as a matter of faith we will not receive prophecies of a quick nature. If we did we would look to the Prophet instead of the HS. But I am sure that many will prophesy as we get real close to the end. It will be a sign.

The current leader of the LDS church is not only called "the prophet", but is sustained as a prophet seer and revelator.

I think that even if we accept the definition of prophet as one who preaches the Gospel, there hasn't been much seeing or revelating.
