What is "anti-Mormon'...?

Post by _Drifting »

The Church and its members warn each other to stay away from anti-Mormons and anti-Mormon literature.

Just what constitutes being "anti-Mormon"?

How does one identify "anti-Mormon literature"?

It is quite simple. For the everyday lay member's point of view "Anti-Mormon" is anything that disagrees with their perspective of what the Church "really is".

I have had members tell me they think The Joseph Smith's Paper's project is an anti-Mormon site.

This is a result of the Church encouraging obedience over all else.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

How does one identify "anti-Mormon literature"?

Anything that would get banned on the ironically-named Mormon Dialog and Discussion board.

Anti-mormon seemed to be used to refer to those who actively and explicitly opposed the Church and its teachings. Its been misused so much over the years I think its become useless. People who have actively and explicitly opposed the teachings of the church have often objected to the use of the term.

A question of definition, I think. If there is a definitive definition for "Ant-Mormon" it would be easier to answer.

I've been called anti-Mormon more than a few times on this board by various people. I admit that I do dislike the Mormon theological teachings and all the rules and regulations that go along with that. I do not dislike Mormons (I feel a little sorry for them).
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

When Mormonism as a religion grows up, the "anti-Mormon" label will fade away. Right now it's you're either with us or against us. Maybe in a thousand years Mormonism will be like Judaism, where you can be a completely secular, atheist Jew, and still accepted by your community.

not just disagree...but dislike.......here we have the nutshell of "anti"-mormon

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anti

the "feel sorry for them" is just the bonus condescension that seems to accompany most anti-mormon rhetoric, and is often a good indicator of what may be anti-mormon.

LOL! With childish responses like this it would be very easy to feel condescending.

I'm guessing, though, that you do not represent most Mormons.

You must have missed the point that I was trying to separate the good people of the LDS Church from the bad dogma.
